L(A/Sa N ~`/ oved For Rele~ 2000/08/29 :CIA-RDP79-011 ~Q00010 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR BUREAU OF MINES WASHINGTON, D.C. 20240 July 2, 1968 *DOI Waiver Letter In ERU File* Mr. James A. Bramwell Director, Basic and Geographic Intelligence Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 We have accomplished an accelerated program for producing the con- siderable backlog of manuscripts remaining in our NIS effort over the past fiscal year. This was done by scheduling the effort of the entire Division from November 1, 1967, through February 1968 on the program for a total of about 10,000 man hours. This, added to the approximately 25,000 man hours on the program during the rest of fiscal 196$ is substantially above the effort represented by our budget allocation for the period. We have done this because of our sincere desire to get the program on a current basis. Because of equipment bottlenecks and editorial delays we have not been able to get the finished manuscripts in your hands. The enclosed schedule gives our estimation of the dates upon which we expect to deliver to your editors the backlog manuscripts. For- tunately this operation will not bear on the early phrases of our effort to produce the scheduled manuscripts during the current fiscal year and we can finally look forward to getting our total NIS com- mitment on an acceptable and workable basis. Most of the manuscripts on the enclosed list will not be done on the tape system as we cannot possibly resolve the bottleneck of the Dura machine and produce this number of drafts in the time allocated. Preliminary discussions with your staff indicate that this will cause no ma3or difficulty as your conversion to the tape system is not complete at present. I will be glad to discuss the details of our efforts in person at your convenience. Sincerely yours, Virg~`1 L~ Barr, Chief Division of International Activities App Release 2000/08/29 :CIA-RDP79-01153A000100070008-6
