r1 ?jroved'Por Releaw20 a/ I . 9-0115300100050026-8 UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT Memorandum TO Director of Basic Intelligence FROM Chief, Editorial Division SUBJECT: Dissemination of NIS to the academic world 18 August 1966 1. Unless a workable arrangement can be developed for producing unclassified versions of certain elements of the NIS, routine dissemination to academic institutions appears infeasible. Currently only Section 23, Weather and Climate, is being seriously examined in this regard, and DIA. reports little progress. 2. The NIS Gazetteer, on the other hand, is quite broadly disseminated to the academic world. Sufficient copies of the "public edition" (devoid of NIS attribution) are printed and distributed by the Government Printing Office to %--p? e ~QG. depository libraries (university and state) throughout the country. An additional 350 copies are distributed through Board on Geographic Names channels to geography and cartography departments of various colleges and universities. Finally, BGN sends a few copies of the "public edition" to commercial publishers of maps and atlases, such as Rand-McNally, for use in textbooks and other instructional materials. 25X1A9a Approved For Release, Q/ ;47 i. , -RDP79-01153A000100050026-8
