iIBhORANDUM FOR: Contributors to JANIS 77.
Subject: Instructions JANIS 77.
11 The area included is the province of Kwantung and the
island of Hai-nan.
,2,. The accompanying blue-line map will be used as a base for
all maps showing the whole area. The inset of Hai-nan Tao will be retained but
all other insets showing on work map will not be included on final printed maps.
3. Maps of any-portion of this area may be drawn to scale
deemed suitable by contributing agency, but should be of the proportions (after
reduction, if necessary) indicated in INSTRUCTIONS TOPIC 5B.
4. A copy of the work map showing BGN approved place names
will be distributed at a later date. This map will be the standard for the
spelling of place names with the exception that very familiar places, such as
Canton, Macao Swatow, Kwangchow, Hainan Strait, South China Sea, Gulf of Tonkin,
etc., may be used. For additional names, use AMS L581 sheets 77 to 90. No
detailed maps are available west of 112?E. B9N Special Publication No. 24, and
A.M.S. Gazetteer of Chinese Place Names based on index.to Ting Atlas, are addition
al sources of names. In using Ting Atlas Gazetteer, hyphen between specific name
and generic should be omitted and initial letter of generic should be capitalized
5. Coastal description will begin at Kwangtung-Fukien boundary
117?15'E., 23?30'N, and follow westward to Tung-hsing 108?E, 21?311N. For Hai-
nan begin at Lang-yeh Wan (Gaalong -)ay) and follow a counter-clockwise direction
around the island.
6. The deadline for submission of all copy (text and illus-
trations) is 1 January 19
