25X9A5 Officer. Mr. Armstrong expressed the view that Howard Furness, who was
joining from the ++R" area of State, would tend to stabilize this
25X1A9a situation and I later arranged for - to be briefed by Mr. Trueheart

7. Chatted with =of PSB on the following points:
a. Undertook to check with Mr. Wisner whether or not Colonel 25X1A9a
25X1 A9a is point-of-contact in the operational complex*
b. Undertook to ascertain whether or not CIA had intelligence
indicating whether or not the Soviets were using their gold
in order to iQaXlqNftee world currencies. (Later requested \C-/
25X1 A9a to follow through on this.) 25X1A9a c? Outlined to our general ideas about coordination
of intelligence support for psychological warfare. Indicated
to him that it would be most helpful if he, too, could
stimulate State into undertaking coordination in that field,
but expressed understanding as to desire to
maintain his relationship with me and CIA, pending a definite 25X1A9a
commitment by State on this point.
25X1A9a 8. Discussed the following with
25X1A9a a. - reviewed his discussion with Mr. Sheldon respect-
ing briefings of personalities, such as General Ridgway.
I indicated that I had been informed by Mr. Sheldon on this
point and was satisfied with the arrangement they had made,
although I desired to be informed in each case as to the
request for such briefings, since they involve policy
questions concerning which I might desire to consult the DCI.
25X1A9a undertook to issue appropriate instructions to his
regional desks.
b. Reviewed the situation respecting tripartite conferences.

9. Conferred with concerning
this Office's position on supergrades. During this meeting I expressed
the view that the most questionable supergrade requested by the DD/I
Offices was that of 16 for Administrative Deputy in O/NE. Although the
number of people involved was much smaller than that in the other office,
I pointed out that this assistant had more prima donnas to deal with of
much higher grade, both within and without the Agency, than any other
similar administrative officer. It was entirely possible that the
grade could be justified on this ground.
10. Mr. Noyes of the Office of the Secretary of Defense
invited me to lunch with him on Monday and requested that I take along
experts qualified to discuss the subject-matter of NSC 107. arranged
