Addressed CIA Orientation Course on Economic Intelligence and, consequently, missed the bulk of D/CI Meeting. 2, Attended IAC Meeting. At the meeting, General Smith referred to the National Intelligence Digest and said that he was extremely pleased with the appearance of the.report, the art and map work, and the generally high standards maintained. He said that he had received the same reaction from the President and wanted particularly that those who were responsible for its production be commended. The Director al- so re-emphasized the need for Net Estimates stating that we had just three alternatives: Joint G-2, G-3 Estimates; Intelligence Estimates based on war plans; or Intelligence estimates based on hypothetical friendly data furnished by the JCS. General Partridge raised the question of the status of NIE-73, "Trends in the Middle East< and the General di- rected that its pr.-or.ty be stepped up so that it be completed right after the current Soviet papers. 25X1X7 25X1A9a I,.. After 48 hours of abortive investigation, approved AD/CI's decision to close the case. 8. Conferred with C olonel Roland of General Weckerling' s Office and later with Mr. Sheldon about intelligence support for General Weckerling at his appearance at a Forum on the Far East at the Armed Forces Staff College. ., -In 25X1X7 U. He still is unwilling to sign off on it though no r eason is given,, and the existence of the document, as noted above$ has been widely broadcast.
