LOCATION: IN WESTERN ALGERIA, APPROXIMATELY 14 NM SE OF THE DISPUTED ALGERIAN/MOROCCAN BORDER. 3. REMARKS: IN OCTOBER 1963, A LONG-STANDING BORDER DISPUTE BETWEEN ALGERIA AND MOROCCO ERUPTED INTO ARMED CONFLICT. SINCE THAT TIME, ALGERIA, WITH SOVIET ASSISTANCE, HAS EMBARKED UPON AN EXTENSIVE MILITARY BUILD-UP. INCLUDED IN THE ALGERIAN INVENTORY OF SOVIET EQUIPMENT SINCE THE FIRST DELIVERY IN OCTOBER 1963 ARE MEDIUM TANKS, SP GUNS, BEAGLE BOMBERS MIG AIRCRAFT, KOMAR BOATS, AND SAM EQUIPMENT. THE NORTH FORT IS SECURED AND WALLED AND CONTAINS 2 PROBABLE BARRACKS BUILDINGS, 1 POSSIBLE VEHICLE STORAGE SHED AND 4 STORAGE/SUPPORT BUILDINGS. A POSSIBLE DEFENSIVE LINE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION FROM A POINT 5 NM EAST OF THE TOWN AREA - EXTENDING NORTHWEST TO A POINT 4 NM NORTH OF TOWN CONTINUING WEST TO POINT APPROXIMATELY 5 NM NORTHWEST OF TOWN THEN DROPPING SOUTHWARDS FOR 2 MILE. THE DEFENSIVE LINE CONSISTS OF COMMUNICATIONS TRENCHES WITH POSSIBLE BUNKERS. TWO FIELD ARTILLERY POSITIONS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION 1 NM WEST OF TOWN. TOP SECRET OB: 9 CARGO TRUCKS AND 1 MOTORIZED GRADER. MISSION? 4036 REVEALS 3 ADDITIONAL EARTH COVERED STORAGE BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN ADDED (1 UNDER CONSTRUCTION) IN THE MUNITIONS STORAGE AREA. ONE PROBABLE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING, 3 STORAGE/SUPPORT BUILDINGS AND 6 TENTS HAVE ALSO BEEN ADDED. A NEW TENT CAMP AREA APPROXIMATELY 2 NM WEST OF TOWN CONTAINS 62 TENTS. A 4 GUN AAA SITE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT THE AIRFIELD IMMEDIATELY WEST OF THE SUPPORT. AREA AND A 4 EMPLACEMENT FA SITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 2 NM NE OF TOWN. CONTINUOUS CONSTRUCTION OF THE PERIMETER DEFENSE LINE HAS ADDED COMMUNICATIONS TRENCHES, AND PERSONNEL TRENCHES WITH FIRING POINTS FOR PROBABLE AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, AND HAS BEEN EXTENDED FROM THE NORTHWEST CORNER SOUTHWARD WHERE PERSONNEL SHELTERS (FOXHOLES) OF THE TENT CAMP AREA HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED. OB: 24 CARGO TRUCKS, 7 PROBABLE CARGO TRUCKS, 2 PROBABLE VAN TRAILERS, PROBABLE 57/85 MM AAA GUNS, AND 2 POSSIBLE RANGER (AA DIRECTORS).
