THE NEW CLASS DESTROYER ESCORT (DE 209) OB-
SERVED AT SHANG-HAI IN JAN 66 WAS PROBABLY
BUILT AFTER THE WITHDRAWAL OF SOVIET TECHNI-
CLANS IN 60 BUT BEFORE MID-6~+, THE EXACT
ORIGIN OF THE SHIP REMAINS OBSCURE,
THIS NEW CLASS DESTROYER ESCORT APPEARS
TO BE THE FIRST MAJOR CHINESE COMBAT SURFACE
SHIP NOT ENTIRELY OF SOVIET DESIGN, ALTHOUGH
THE SHIP'S HULL IS THE SAME LENGTH AS THE
SOVIET "RIGA" AND APPARENTLY WAS BUILT TO
"RIGA" -CLASS SPECIFICATIONS, MAJOR CHANGES
ARE EVIDENT ON THE SUPERSTRUCTURE, THE MAIN
