SIGNIFICANCE: RAS BANAS IS THE ONLY MAJOR EGYPTIAN AIRFIELD ON THE RED SEA COAST SOUTH OF AS SUWAYS. 2. REMARKS: THE AIRFIELD WAS CONSTRUCTED BY THE EGYPTIAN AIR FORCE ON THE SITE OF THE OLD MINA BARANIS LANDING GROUND AND BECAME OPERATIONAL IN LATE 1862. ALTHOUGH AIRCRAFT ARE NOT BELIEVED TO BE PERMANENTLY ASSIGNED TO THE FIELD, IT HAS BEEN USED TO SUPPORT THE EGYPTIAN EFFORT IN YEMEN. MINA BARANIS (PORT BERENICE) IS A SMALL PORT FACILITY SERVING RAS BANAS AIRFIELD AND THE INLAND TALC MINES. 3. LOCATION: IN SOUTHEAST EGYPT ON THE RED SEA COAST APPROXIMATELY 140 NM EAST OF ASWAN AND 1g NM WNW OF RAS BANAS AT 2358N o3528E. FOUR ADDITIONAL HARDSTANDS ARE LOCATED NORTH OF THE TAXIWAY. SUPPORT FACILITIES INCLUDE POL STORAGE AND APPROXIMATELY 35 BUILDINGS. NO AIRCRAFT OBSERVED. ONE NM SE OF THE AIRFIELD IS A SMALL PORT FACILITY. THE MOLE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED UNDER CONSTRUCTION APPEARS COMPLETE, THE MOLE APPEARS TO TAPPER INTO THE WATER TO FORM A BRESTING PLATFORM. TWO BUOYS ARE OBSERVED IMMEDIATELY NE AND SE OF THE BRESTING PLATFORM AND A LANDING IS LOCATED NNE OF THE BRESTING PLATFORM.
