THE 57 COVERAGE AND ADDITIONAL COVERAGE IN DEC 59, REVEALED FOUR SURFACE-TO- SURFACE BALLISTIC MISSILE TEST LAUNCH COMPLEXES IN VARIOUS STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION, ONE FOR AERODYNAMIC VEHICLES AND TWO FOR TRAINING; A LARGE SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILE DEVELOPMENT COM- FLEX, AND A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF SUPPORTING FACILITIES FOR THE OPERATION OF THIS HIGHLY ACTIVE AND DIVERSIFIED PAD FACI- LITY. 2. SIXTEEN SUBSEQUENT KH MISSIONS FROM AUG 60 THROUGH SEP 63 RE- VEALED THE COMPLETION OF EXISTING FACILITIES, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF ADDITIONAL FACILITIES: SUCH AS, NEW LAUNCH SITES AT THE SAM R & D COMPLEX, MRBM AND IRBM SILO TEST FACILITIES AND SOFT SITE TRAINING FACILITIES, AND MISCELLANEOUS ELECTRONICS AND SUPPORT .FACILITIES. PROVIDED THE. FIRST KH-7 COVERAGE OF KYMTC, BUT CLOUDS, OBLIQUITY AND HEAVY SNOW HAMPERED INTERPRETATION. PROVIDED THE BEST COVERAGE TO DATE. LAUNCH COM- I October FLEXES "A", "B", AND "C" WERE OBSERVED IN GREAT DETAIL. HIGH- LIGHTS REPORTED WERE A SS-I+ TRAINING EXERCISE UNDER WAY AT CCM- FLEX "A"; A NEWLY IDENTIFIED LAUNCH FACILITY AT COMPLEX "B"; A TRAINING EXERCISE AT "3-C" WITH MISSILE., ERECTOR., AND OTHER SUP- PORT VEHICLES VISIBLE; SILOS AT 1+C-1 AND 4C-2, AND TWO MISSILES ON TRANSPORTERS AT 5C-1. A RAIL-SERVED UNIDENTIFIED FACILITY WAS LOCATED BEHIND LAUNCH COMPLEX "B". LAUNCH COMPLEX "C". A NEW RAIL SPUR WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND BRANCHED FROM THE RAIL SERVING LAUNCH AREA 1C JUST WEST OF COMPLEX "C" OPERATIONS CONTROL CENTER AND EXTENDED TO THE FORMER l+C SUPPORT AREA. ROAD BED CONSTRUCTION TERMINATED AT THE ROAD SERVING LAUNCH AREAS 4 AND 5C. CONSTRUCTION CONTINUED AT LAUNCH AREA 1C. VEHICLE TRACKS APPEARED TO ENCIRCLE THE ENTIRE LAUNCH AREA. A PROBABLE MISSILE EXERCISE WAS UNDER WAY AT 2C. A POSSIBLE MISSILE EXERCISE WAS UNDERWAY AT LAUNCH AREA 3C. SAM FACILITIES.- THE ROAD SERVING THE NEW ACTIVITY HAD JOINED THE MAIN ROAD INTO THE SAM COMPLEX IMMEDIATE,Y TO THE REAR OF THE SAM R&D LAUNCH AREA. THE CENTER OF THE NEW ACTIVITY AT THE END OF THE NEW ROAD WAS BEING FENCED. ? THE AREA WAS RAIL- SERVED AND SHOWED NEW CONSTRUCTION SCARRING SINCE WEST AND NORTH OF THE EXISTING FACILITY. PORTIONS OF THE TEST CENTER WERE SUBSEQUENTLY COVERED BY TWO KH MISSIONS WHICH REPORT NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. REVEALED ACTIVITY WAS EVIDENT IN THE R&D, SA-2 AND SA-3 LAUNCH AREAS. THE UNIDENTIFIED FACILITY NW OF THE SAM R&D LAUNCH AREA APPEARED TO STILL BE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. NO FUNCTION COULD THEN BE AS- CRIBED TO THIS FACILITY. THE UNIDENTIFIED STRUCTURE AT THE END OF.ACCESS ROAD APPEARED TO HAVE GREATER HEIGHT THAN WHEN PREVIOUSLY OBSERVED. SCARRING INDICATIVE OF A FIREBREAK CLEARING WAS EVIDENTI THE ELEVATED STRUCTURE IN THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE ELECTRONICS AREA WAS IDENTIFIED AS A LARGE DISH ANTENNA ON A TOWER WHICH IN TURN WAS MOUNTED ON A BUILDING. 8. THIS MISSION REVEALS: LAUNCH COMPLEX "A". A PROBABLE MISSILE EXERCISE IS UNDERWAY AT THE SOUTHERN LAUNCH PAD AT COMPLEX "A". THE MISSILE APPEARS TO BE ERECTED. TWO, POSSIBLY THREE, VEHICLES ARE PRESENT ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE TOP SECRET 000200010060-2 Approved F ?S4ffiEi9 3 October 19-64 Page _4 PAD AND APPROXIMATELY SIX VEHICLES ARE PARKED A SHORT DISTANCE OFF THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE PAD. A POSSIBLE MISSILE TRANSPORTER IS ON THE NORTHERN LAUNCH PAD. THE NORTHERN EARTH-RAMP STRUCTURE DOES NOT APPEAR ACTIVE, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE THREE UNIDENTIFIED OBJECTS AT THE TOP OF THE STRUCTURE. THE SOUTHERN EARTH-RAMPED STRUCTURE IS INACTIVE. NEW BIVOUAC/TRAINING AREA IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 2.3 NM WEST OF LAUNCH COMPLEX "B". IT CONSISTS OF FOUR SECTIONS, EACH ENCLOSED BY A FIREBREAK. THE LARGEST SECTION CONTAINS TWO PROBABLE BUILD- INGS, 5 SQUAD-TYPE TENTS, APPROXIMATELY 50 PERSONNEL TENTS, AND APPROXIMATELY 6 SMALL VEHICLES. ADJACENT TO THIS AREA ARE 12 PER- SONNEL TENTS, 1 PROBABLE BUILDING, 1 PROBABLE MISSILE TRANSPORTER, AND 7 SMALLER VEHICLES. THE MOTOR POOL (SECOND LARGEST SECTION) CONTAINS 5 MISSILE TRANSPORTERS, 4 LONG VEHICLES, AND APPROXIMATELY 40 SMALLER VEHICLES. ONE PROBABLE BUILDING IS ADJACENT TO THE TWO REMAINING SECTIONS. ONE SECTION CONTAINS 1'TENT AND 8 VEHICLES AND THE OTHER CONTAINS 5 VEHICLES. LAUNCH COMPLEX "C" LAUNCH AREA 1C. THE TWO PADS ARE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THE PADS ARE APPROXIMATELY 90 FT SQUARE AND A RAIL SPUR APPEARS TO TERMINATE AT THE CENTER OF EACH PAD. THE RAIL SERVED LAUNCHER HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE OLD LAUNCH PAD. THERE ARE FIVE PIECES OF UNIDEN- TIFIED EQUIPMENT ON THIS PAD AND TWO NEW BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN COM- PLETED WEST OF IT. THERE ARE TWO VEHICLES ON THE ACCESS ROAD TO THE SITE AND AN UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT IS ON THE RAIL LINE OUTSIDE THE LAUNCH AREA FENCE LINE. LAUNCH AREA 2C. ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED ON BOTH PADS AND A VEHICLE CONVOY IS ON THE ACCESS ROAD IMMEDIATELY OUTSIDE THE LAUNCH AREA. THE CONVOY INCLUDES 10 VEHICLES OF VARIOUS SIZES, THE TWO LONGEST MEASURING APPROXIMATELY 55 FT. THE SOUTHERN LAUNCH PAD CONTAINS A PROBABLE TRANSPORTER BACKED UP TO A PROBABLE ERECTOR, THE TOTAL LENGTH OF BOTH VEHICLES MEASURING 130 FT. ANOTHER SMALL VEHICLE IS IN MOTION ON THE PAD. THE NORTHERN PAD CONTAINS THREE VEHICLES APPROXIMATELY 65 FT LONG AND AN UNIDENTIFIED PIECE OF EQUIP- MENT. THERE IS A VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 65 FT LONG IN FRONT OF THE NORTHERN VEHICLE STALL AND APPROXIMATELY SEVEN ADDITIONAL VEHICLES IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. LAUNCH AREA 3C. NO ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED AT THE LAUNCH PADS, HOWEVER APPROXIMATELY 20 VEHICLES ARE GROUPED AROUND ONE OF THE THREE MOCK-UP MISSILES LOCATED WEST OF THE LAUNCH PAD. A PROBABLE PRIME MOVER WITH TRAILER APPROXIMATELY 55 FT LONG PARKED ON A HARDSTAND IN FRONT OF ONE OF THE SUPPORT BUILDINGS, IS ALSO OBSERVED. LAUNCH AREA 4C. ACTIVITY AND NEW CONSTRUCTION ARE NOTED AT '4C1. THE NEW RAIL LINE BRANCHING OFF THE LINE SERVING LAUNCH AREA 1C IS BEING CONTINUED TO THE LAUNCH SITE. THE RAIL BED TERMINATES IN A FORK JUST EAST OF THE WESTERN REAR SILO. A NEW SQUARE EX- CAVATION LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 200 FT SOUTH OF THE WESTERN REAR SILO CONTAINS A ROW OF 4 LINEAR OBJECTS AND A CIRCULAR HOLE OR REVETMENT. A LARGE STRUCTURE IS OBSERVED BETWEEN THE EXCAVATION AND THE SITE ACCESS ROAD. THE TALL STRUCTURE FORMERLY POSITIONED OVER THE EASTERN FORWARD SILO HAS BEEN MOVED NORTH TO THE SILO COVER. A CRANE IS DISCERNIBLE NEAR THE EASTERN REAR SILO AND AN UNIDENTI- FIED VEHICLE IS AT THE EASTERN FORWARD SILO. APPROXIMATELY 10 VEHICLES ARE PARKED IN TWO ROWS TO THE EAST OF THE LAUNCH SILOS. AT 4C2, SIX UNIDENTIFIED VEHICLES ARE PARKED ON THE SITE LOOP ROAD AND ONE NEXT TO THE CLOSED FORWARD SILO. LAUNCH AREA 5C. ACTIVITY IS EVIDENT ON BOTH OF THE ELONGATED PADS AT 5C1. THREE UNIDENTIFIED VEHICLES ARE ON THE NORTHERN PAD AND ONE IS PARKED IN THE CENTER OF THE SOUTHERN PAD. TWO POSSIBLE. TOP SECRET Approve For ReleaseTr/QTj TRANSPORTERS AND 3 UNIDENTIFIED VEHICLES ARE OBSERVED ON THE LOOP ROAD. FIVE UNIDENTIFIED VEHICLES ARE ON A PARKING APRON, AND ONE IS PARKED ON A ROAD EXTENDING WEST FROM THE NORTHERN PAD. NONE OF THE BUILDINGS ARE COMPLETE AND THE PADS REQUIRE ADDITIONAL WORK AT 5C2. NO VEHICLES ARE OBSERVED WITHIN THE LAUNCH SITE. PROBABLE MISSILE ASSEMBLY AND CHECKOUT AREA. THIS AREA IS APPROX- IMATELY 5.5 NM NW OF LAUNCH COMPLEX "C" FINAL ASSEMBLY AND CHECKOUT AREA AND IS RAIL-SERVED AND SHOWS NEW ACTIVITY. THE WESTERN SECURITY I a October 1964 Page 15, NOW INCLUDES AN APPROXIMATELY FORTY PERCENT INCREASE IN AREA. IN THE SOUTHWESTERN SECTION OF THIS AREA, THERE ARE THREE POSSIBLE DRIVE-THROUGH BUILDINGS UNDER CONSTRUCTION WITH DIMENSIONS OF APPROX- IMATELY 175 BY 55 FT APPROXIMATELY 1500 FT TO THE NORTH IS ANOTHER NEW BUILDING MEASURING APPROXIMATELY 110 BY 50 FT WHICH WILL PROBABLY BE RAIL ENTERED. IN THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL AREA, A RAIL SERVED PROBABLE DRIVE-IN BUILDING MEASURING APPROXIMATELY 90 BY LAUNCH COMPLEX "E". NEW SCARRING NORTH OF THE PAD IS PARALLEL TO THE SOUTHERN LOOP ACCESS ROAD. UNIDENTIFIED PIECES OF EQUIPMENT ARE LOCATED ON THE NORTHERN CORNER OF THE PAD. NEW AREA UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THIS AREA IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 2.5 NM NNE OF LAUNCH COMPLEX "E". THE AREA IS ROAD-SERVED BY A CONTINUATION OF THE ROAD SERVING LAUNCH COMPLEX "E". THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF THIS NEW AREA OR SERVICE ROAD ONI THE AREA IS RECTANGULAR AND MEASURES 735 BY 620 FT.. IT IS SECURED BY A SINGLE FENCE AND HAS TWO SECURITY BUILDINGS AT THE ENTRANCE. THE FENCE IS BROKEN NEAR THE NORTHERN CORNER FOR ACCESS TO A BOR- ROW PIT. A RAISED STRUCTURE APPROXIMATELY 35 FT SQUARE NEAR THE CENTER OF, THE AREA IS SURROUNDED BY A LOOP ROAD. A CIRCULAR REVET- MENT IS ADJACENT TO THE WESTERN SIDE AND A LINEAR REVETMENT IS ADJACENT TO THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE LOOP ROAD. A BIVOUAC/TRAINING AREA, NEW SINCE IS OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY 2 NM WEST OF LAUNCH COMPLEX "E". THE AREA CONSISTS OF TWO RECTANGULAR SECTIONS, BOTH SURROUNDED BY FIREBREAKS. ONE SECTION CONTAINS 68 SMALL TENTS, 5 LARGE TENTS, AND APPROXIMATELY 10 VEHICLES. THE OTHER SECTION IS A MOTOR POOL AREA CONTAINING 19 LARGE VEHICLES, 27 SMALL VEHICLES, AND 4 POSSIBLE SMALL TENTS. A DRIVE-THROUGH REVETMENT IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO THIS SECTION.
