CONFIRMATION OF SOVIET AIR FORCES (SAF) AIRCRAFT CONTROL AND WARNING (AC&W)
UNITS WHICH DIFFER WITH KNOWN EARLY WARNING (EW) BATTALIONS AND EW REGIMENTS
COMMENT: It is believed that the SAF has an air army level unit and one or more air
division level AC&W unit(s) for every military district. These units are capable of
establishing GCI/AW/EW radar sites, activating air traffic control (ATC) procedures, and
providing additional communication channels for contingency airfields. Unlike EW units
subordinate to ground armies, AC&W units contain R-820 Series radio trucks (in lieu of
R-122), mobile airfield GSE, and TWIN PLATE (R-410) troposcatter stations. AC&W units
are alsQ referred to as Tac Air Signal Battalions and Regiments organic to a Tac Air Armj
