Photography is of excellent quality except for scattered clouds and haze from exposure No. 1 through exposure 30 and heavy cloud cover at the end of the mission from about exposure 650 on. Complete malfunction of tracker. 6011 provided a wealth of information concerning an important section of the Soviet Far East. Major items of intelligence included the following: excellent coverage of such urban areas as SOVETSKAYA GAVAN, KOMSO MOLSK, SVOBODNYY, KUYBYSHEVKA, and KHABAROVSK; confirmation of a railroad following the AMUR River NE from KOMSOMOLSK; a large unidentified secure installation similar in several respects to MOZHAYSK and VALDAY;numerous electronic installations including three KRUG'S near KHABAROVSK; and KOMSOMOLSK SHIPYARD 199. Fifteen major airfields were covered including two new fields. Total aircraft count on these fields included 166 Bombers, 242 Fighters, 183 Transports, 13 Helicopters, 42 Gliders, and 83 Liaison planes. Some additional seventeen smaller fields were seen with a plane count of 4 n Bombers, 2 Transports, 6 Helicopters, and 5 Liaison. This report covers only the highlights of the mission with much exploitation remaining to be accomplished. The NAVAL facilities were on the extreme limits of oblique photo- graphy. Identification by type of some of the vessels present is possible from preliminary photographs without rectification including 3 Submarines confirmed, 2 possible Submarines, 3 Destroyers, 1 possible Destroyer, 1 Cruiser, approximately 47 Motor Torpedo Boats, and other miscellaneous craft. b. Sovetskaya Gavan New Construction 48?47'N - 140?17'E To the southwest of Shipyard No. 263 is a new heavily built-up area, consisting of a new motor torpedo boat pier (24 MTB's) and support facilities, and major warehouse facility and POL storage. c. ALEKSEYEVSKOYE AIRFIELD 49?15'N - 140?14'E One concrete runway, E/W, 8000 by 250 feet, cleared of snow. What appears to be special weapons storage and handling installation located on north side of field. Aircraft observed: 25 BADGER, 14 BEAGLE, 2 BULL, and 2 U/I. VANINO AIRFIELD 49?02'N - 140?15'E One surfaced runway, NNW/SSE, 6000 by 200 feet, cleared of snow. Aircraft observed: 71 probable FRESCO. e. SOVETSKAYA GAVAN AIRFIELD 48?59'N - 140?20'E Snow-covered sod landing area some 4000 feet in length. Aircraft observed: 13 probable CAB. 2. RAILROAD RUNNING NE FROM KOMSOMOLSK A railroad is operational NE from KOMSOMOLSK as far North as 51?00'N - 138?00'E. The rail line was observed following the East bank of the AMUR RIVER as far north as the vicinity of NIZHNE-TAMBOVSKOYE. 3. KOMSOMOLSK AREA 50?33'N - 136?59'E The city of KOMSOMOLSK and surrounding area is covered by photo- graphy of excellent quality. a. KOMSOMOLSK AIRFIELD 50?36'N - 137?04'E One concrete runway, HIS, 6500 by 200 feet, cleared of snow. Airframe plants 126 and 130 are adjacent to this field. Aircraft observed: 98 FRESCO, 1 CAB, 1 probable CORK, 1 probable MAX, 1 U/I. Aircraft observed: 6 FLASHLIGHT, 29 probable FRESCO, 1 U/I. c. KOMSOMOLSK SHIPYARD 199 50?33'N - 137?02'E The shipyard and outfitting basins are icebound. No submarines are evident in the area. A third set of covered building ways has been completed making a total of 9 covered ways, ranging from 400 to 700 feet long. Many miscellaneous craft are icebound in the shipyard basins. 4. STRATEGIC STORAGE COMPLEX NEAR OMNI 50?06'N - 136?30'E, 33 nm SW of KOMSOMOLSK A large rail-served storage and industrial-type installation, together with two probable strategic storage sites, is located approximately 33 nautical miles SW of KOMSOMOLSK. The industrial-type installation (50?06'N - 136?30'E) encompasses 1.5 square nautical miles and contains a storage section and a rail transloading or operational section. The latter area consists of several heavily-revetted buildings, transloading points, and other U/I buildings. It is probable that the area handles explosive or toxic material of some type. The area is heavily secured and contains 135 revetted bomb and ammunition - type storage buildings (130' x 70'). A second large secured storage facility is located 5.5 n.m. miles SStW of the industrial - type installation (50?00'N - 136?28'E). It contains at least 15 large conventional-type storage buildings and several smaller structures. 5. KOMSOMOLSK ELECTRONICS INSTALLATION 50?39'N - 136?55'E 10 nm NW of KOMSOMOLSK At least three separate antenna systems of different types each with cooling ponds. Each area it fenced and has adjacent administration and housing facilities. One is a group of 13 lattice towers, roughly V-shaped in layout. Another consists of 7 cable scars fanning out to 7 pairs of lattice towers. The third consists of 2 tall stick masts. Between this installation and the city of Komsomolsk is a group of high-frequency rhombic arrays. 6. SREDNE BELOYE 50?41'N - 12800l'E Compacted gravel landing, oriented N/S, some 4000 feet in length and 300 feet wide. Aircraft observed: 1 probable FRESCO, 38 probable CAB, 1 probable COLT. 7. UKRAINA AIRFIELD 51?07'N - 128?27'E One cbncreterunway, NW/SE, 12, 000 by 280 feet, with three crossovers connecting to a parallel taxiway, cleared of snow. A Special Weapons Storage Area is under construction approximately 4 nm NE of UKRA4I4A Airfield. It is an isolated area and is served by a well-paved road which originates at the South end of the Airfield. In general, the area is similar to the outer-type Special Weapons Storage Areas located at BOBRUYSK and ORSHA in the Western U.S.S.R. and has at least one major building that is identical to the type found in other Soviet 13 9ap4A, 6 61-rd-we Special Weapons Sites. Aircraft observed: 19 BADGER, 6 BULL, 1 CAB. 50?54'N - 128?28'E Two probable blacktop runways, one NW/SE, 4000 by 300 feet, the other NNW/SSE, 3500 by 200 feet. Numerous barracks and military areas, together with at least 42 MARE gliders and 46 transports indicate a major concentration of military airborne units in the area. Several major military and strategic- type storage areas are scattered throughout the complex. 11. VOZZHAYEVKA NORTHEAST AIRFIELD 50?45'N - 128?46'E (NEW AIRFIELD) One concrete runway, N/S, 7000 by 170 feet, cleared of snow. Nearby is an active bombing range. Aircraft observed: 29 BULL, 1 probable COLT. SERGEYEVKA SOUTH AIRFIELD 48?24'N - 135?25'E (NEW AIRFIELD) One blacktop runway, NNE/SSW, 5500 by 200 feet, partially cleared of snow. The old SERGEYEVKA EAST field shown on the target chart has been abandoned. Aircraft observed: 35 possible FRESCO, 1 CREEK. c. KHABAROVSK NE NO. 1 48?32'N - 135?10'E 25X1 Sod landing area oriented NE/SW some 4600 by 800 feet. Aircraft observed: 10 probable BUCK, 5 COLT, 14 U/I single engine, 5 HARE, 2 HOUND. d.
