FISHBONE HIGH-FREQUENCY COMMUNICATIONS RECEIVING -ANTENNA,
KURGANCHA MRBM LAUNCH AREA NO 2, USSR
INTRODUCTION
This report has been prepared in response
This
requirement asked for reexamination of a fish-
bone high-frequency communications receiving
antenna observed on Mission 4006,
at Kurgancha \IRI3M Launch Area
south-southwest of Kurgancha (Figure 1).
This requirement also requested informa-
tion on any other communications facilities
serving this \1RBM complex, but none were lo-
cated due to the obliquity and poor quality of
the photography.
No 2, which is located 3.3 nautical miles (nm)
Location: Approximately 0.1 nm west of Kur-
gancha MRB\1 Launch Area No 2
Coordinates: 3-37N 65-57L
The fishbone antenna has been construc-
ted since September 1963 and is located within
a large irregular-shaped secured area measur-

ing approximately 1,660 by 1,200 feet on its
north and east sides (FiLure 2). The secured
area contains one control building. I here are
indications that the area may also contain
other types of antennas, but poor-quality pho-
tography and obliquity preclude an accurate
analysis of the specific types.
The fishbone antenna is arranged in a two-
bay, 5-3-3-5 pattern, and covers an area 263
by 246 feet measured from guy anchor to guy
anchor. The fishbone antenna is estimated to
have an optimum frequency of 18 megacycles
with a usable range of 13 to 22 megacycles.

The major axis orientation is directed toward
Murmansk at an angle of approximately 340
degrees on the forward azimuth; the back az-
imuth does not appear directed toward any par-
ticular subscriber.
Correspondence along the great circle bear-
ing with Kurgancha could possibly be associated
With Irgiz, Orsk, Ufa, Perm, and Izhevsk, as
well a Murmansk. This major axis orientation
is subject to reasonable error due to the obliq-
uity of the photography and to the fact that only
one bearing could be obtained.-
