MILITARY TRAINING AREA
BARANOVICHI, USSR
BELORUSSIAN MD
25X1A
A large training area (Baranovichi Barracks
and Maneuver Area Lesnaya,
located 11.3 miles (18.2 kilometers) southwest
of Baranovichi at 53-03N 025-47E covers ap-
proximately 25,000 acres (Figure 1).
The training area contains a bivouac area,
an aerial gunnery range with several aircraft
silhouettes, three wheeled-vehicle driver train-
ing courses, one tracked-vehicle driver train'
ing course, three moving target tank firing
ranges, a possible vehicle-mounted automatic
weapons firing range with a stationary target,
10 field artillery positions, and six. 6-gun
AAA sites. Vehicle tracks crisscross the
entire" area.
One moving target tank firing range con-
sists of two firing lanes 1,445 feet long and
three target runs with a maximum distance
from the static firing line to the target of 2,885
feet. The second consists of eight firing lanes,
two 2,900 feet, four 2,345 feet, one 1,675 feet
and one 1,845 feet, and eight target runs with
a maximum distance of 4,210 feet. The third
consists of four firing lanes, two 2,345 feet,
one 1,675 and one 1,510 feet, and two target
runs with a maximum distance of 3,650 feet.
A small secured area in the eastern part
of the training area covers 20 acres and con-
tains four storage buildings of the following
dimensions: two 200 by 50 feet, one 105 by 65
feet and one 95 by 55 feet. Four unidentified
buildings ranging from 35 by 15 to 140 by 25
feet are also in the secured area.
Other facilities of military significance in-
clude Baranovichi SAM Site B24-2 in the south-
ern section of the training area, Ammunition
Storage Area Paulinava, Ammunition Storage
Area Lesnaya North, and the Baranovichi Air
Depot Long Range.
The area is road served but not directly
rail served. However, the Baranovichl-Slonim
railroad is just north of the area and the Baran-
ovichi-Lesnaya railroad is 1.5 kilometers
southeast.
_ reveals no change in the size of the train-
ing area. The only change in facilities was the
addition in - of a 7,700 by 500-foot
dirt landing strip probably serviceable for light
aircraft at the aerial gunnery range. The over-
all training area appeared consistently active
during the summer and fall months. Only
the moving target ranges and tracked-vehicle
driver training courses were visibly active
on snow-covered photography of
