Approved For Rele* se 2003/12T4 f: Wb 4759AO097000100 25X1 26-May 1970 Copy 10 MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, P04/SPO, NSA ATTENTION SUBJECT : Communications Media at ABM-Related Facilities REFERENCE : NSA/SPO/R-110-70 NPIC Project 250694 1. In response to the referenced NSA requirement a careful review of photography was conducted to determine the existence of communica- tions antennas at the following facilities: Moscow ABM Launch Complexes 1305, E24, E31, and E33, Naro-Fominsk ABM/Space Radar Sites A and B, Chekhov ABM/Space Sites A and B, Olenegorsk ABM/Space Tracking Radar Facility, Skrunda ABM/Space Tracking Radar Facility, Sevastopol ABM/Space Tracking Radar Facility, Mishelevka Antisatellite/Space Tracking Radar Facility, and Sary-Shagan Antisatellite/Space Tracking Radar Facility. 2. Neither communications antennas or unidentified communications facilities could be discerned at any of the above facilities. However, an association between the Olenegorsk ABM/Space Tracking Radar Facility and the Olenegorsk Troposcatter Facility can not be ruled out. The Olenegorsk Troposcatter Facility (68-04-30N 033-59-30E) is positioned approximately 3 nautical miles southeast of the HEN HOUSE radars. It consists of two type IIA troposcatter antennas, a control building, and two support build- ings. It was first identified on photography of and became 25X1 suspect as a possible communications link from the HEN HOUSE radars. The appearance of trenching which connects the troposcatter facility with the support area for the LIEN HOUSE radars lends additional evidence to this suspicion. Although the troposcatter facility may serve in a HEN HOUSE communications role, it is more probable that-it is a segment of the Moscow to Murmansk communications chain with its correspondent at Ponoy, USSR. 3.
