The SA-4 GANEF missile was first observed at the Moscow May Day parade in 1964. The three basic components of the system are a tracked transporter-launcher which carries two missiles (Figure 1), a tracking-guidance radar, and a LONG TRACK acquisition radar. In some instances, the THIN SKIN height finder radar has also been seen with the system.* The GANEF missile units are housed in military installations which have many features in common with those tactical SSM barracks occupied by Army SS-1 SCUD ballistic missile units. These features include security fOncing and solid board walls, security buildings at access points, and additional internal security walls or fences in motor pool areas. *DIA. The equipment most frequently observed in the open at GANEF missile installations, shown in Figure 2, consists of the GANEF missile sustainer canister with attached booster crate, a ZIL-157V truck tractor with a step-down flatbed semitrailer used to transport the missile shipping canister and crate, and a resupply-transloading vehicle. The resupply-transloading vehicle, shown in Figure 3, is a URAL- 375 truck chassis with large canvas-covered near section and a narrow protrusion extending forward over the truck cab and hood. The vehicle has support jacks on each side. It has been observed carrying a single canvas-covered GANEF missile. The resupply-transloading vehicle probably serves to resupply the launcher in the field, provide a platform for final missile checkout, and transfer the missile to the launcher. 25X1 25X1 25X1 FIGURE 3.
