PI NOTES, A PUBLICATION OF CIA IMAGERY ANALYSIS DIVISION,
HIGHLIGHTS SIGNIFICANT INTELLIGENCE ITEMS DERIVED FROM
PHOTOGRAPHY, AS WELL AS CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE
"PI" FIELD.
P.I. NOTES 49/66
"PI NOTES" was not issued for the week of 21 October 1966. This issue
covers a 2-week period.
IAD services a considerable number of requests from Headquarters
for film positives, prints, enlargements, slides, and vugraphs. These
requests compete for photo lab support and for P. I. time that would
normally be assigned to the substantive P. I. production effort.
Prior to submitting such non-P. I. requirements, requesters should
seriously consider a loan of these materials from existing files. They
should also limit the number of copies requested and the types of items,
on a specific target area, to a print, slide, vugraph, or enlargement
rather than requesting all four. If there are any questions concerning
your specific needs, contact IAD. Your cooperation will be appreciated
and will benefit you through more timely and improved P. I. eff ort.
The give you some idea of the volume of non-P. I. products supplied
to Headquarters analysts, the following is cited:
1st Qtr All of
FY 67 FY 66
Duplicate positives, Negatives, Plates 5, 786 25, 593
Prints, Mosaics, Enlargements 1, 007 7, 348
Vugraphs, Slides, Boards 94 723
The above figures are taken from the CIA/IAD Tabulation of Departmental
Support, which is submitted monthly to each Directorate.

NORTH VIETNAM
Detailed analysis of 25X1A
reveals the presence of deceptive bridging techniques
one nm east of Dao My, North Vietnam, at UTM WF 395832.
Photography of a year ago (Figure 5) revealed that the 170-foot
4-span, steel and concrete, half-through truss highway bridge
serving Route 15 had been bombed and the center two spans had been 25X1A
dropped. The photography of (Figure 6) reveals
that the dropped spans and the center pier have been cleared away.
Garnished netting to simulate the appearance of the destroyed spans
has been draped across the void created by the missing bridge components.
A bridge deck section has been identified on the northwest bridge approach.
This structure is probably placed on the bridge at night, making it
serviceable to vehicular traffic.
A probable dummy bridge (Figure 7) is under construction at
UTM WF 392830, 0. 2 nm southwest of the main bridge structure.
Approach roads, characterized by exceptional width (to draw attention
to the dummy bridge) and impractically sharp turns, have been
constructed from Route 15 to both ends of the bridge site. Probable
garnished netting (Figure 8) has been stretched across the river
between the ends of the site. Material is probably being woven into
the netting in order to simulate the appearance of a solid deck.
