This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the Production Center 1Pla.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified

A military training area, located approx-
imately 6 kilometers (km) northwest of Ala-
kurtti (Figure 1), is centered at 67-01-OON
030-19-OOE and consists of a tank/assault-
gun firing range and a driver-training course
(Figure 2). It covers approximately 500 acres
and is linked by a secondary road to Alakurtti
Army Barracks, Tumcha River East (BE No
A second military training area is located
at 66-51-30N 030-13-OOE, approximately 13 km
southwest of Alakurtti Army Barracks, Tumcha
River East. It covers approximately 1,150
acres and includes a tank/assault-gun firing
range, a flat-trajectory firing range, and an
infantry field-training area (Figure 2). It is
linked by a secondary road to Alakurtti Army
Barracks, Tumcha River East.
KEYHOLE missions covered the
areas between Com- 25X1 D
parative analysis revealed no significant
changes. No military activity was observed
during winter coverage.
Access to the Murmansk-Belomorsk single-
track branch line is at Alakurtti.
Service roads connect each area to Alakurtti
Army Barracks, Tumcha River East.
Aircraft Landing Strip
Alakurtti Airfield is accessible by road.
Driver-Training Area
Area M is a wheeled/tracked-vehicle dri-
ver-training course which covers approximately
230 acres in an irregular layout.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges
Area Ni is a 4,000-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,500-foot lanes, 1
moving target, and 2 possible fixed targets.
Area N2 is an 8,500-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with 2 L-shaped lanes, one 6,500
feet and one 2,000 feet. A possible impact area
is located at the eastern end of the range.
Flat-Trajectory Firing Range
Area P is a 720-foot flat-trajectory firing
range with 5 targets.
Infantry or Combined-Arms Field-Training-
Area
Area R is an infantry field-training area
covering approximately 675 acres.
