This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles anct letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage/maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
,(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

The Katta Kurgan Maneuver Area is located
approximately 12 kilometers (km) west of Katta
Kurgan and immediately south of the Katta Kur-
gan-Bukhara rail line (Figure 1).
This installation encompasses approx-
imately 3,000 acres and contains a probable
tracked-vehicle driver-training area, 2 tank/
assault-gun firing ranges, a bivouac area with
3 small support buildings, an old fort (destroyed),
and a large combined-arms exercise area. The
exercise area contains extensive trenching, gun
positions, track activity, and small bivouac areas
(Figure 2).
This installation has been covered by' KEY-
HOLE missions of interpretable quality.
Activity at this military installation appears
to be limited to seasonal training exercises.
Permanent facilities for a continuous daily
operation are lacking.
Railroad Service
The Katta Kurgan-Bukhara rail line is lo-
cated immediately north of the maneuver area.
Access to the area is provided by all-
weather roads.
Administration and Troop housing Area
Area D contains 3 small support buildings
within the bivouac area.
Driver-Training Area
Area M is a probable tracked-vehicle dri-
ver-training area.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges
Area Ni is a 4,000-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with six 1,950-foot lanes and 5
(probably moving) targets.
Area N2 is a 3,200-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with two 1,700-foot lanes and an
undetermined number of targets.
Artillery Emplacements (Batteries)
Numerous artillery emplacements are
scattered throughout the area.
Infantry or Combined-Arms Field-Training
Area or Courses
Area R is an infantry or combined-arms
field-training area or course immediately west
of the tank/assault-gun ranges. The entire area
contains extensive trenching, gun positions,
track activity, and a small bivouac area.
