Associated with the rail spur are a railroad yard, three open storage areas, a new housing development. and an older village. The rail spur measures 4,825 feet in length. At the time of photog- raphy the roadbed was only partially complete; track had not been laid. From the point where the spur right-of-way leaves the main rail line, it makes a U-shaped turn 2,650 feet long on a radius of approxi- mately 860 feet before ending in a straight segment, 2,175 feet in length. Near the main line a grade for the spur has been provided by earth fill obtained from two borrow pits, one south and one west of the installation. The yard, located just west of the point where the spur originates, extends along the main line, which is reported to be double tracked. The yard, measuring 3,500 feet in length, may. consist of'ais 'many as seven tracks. A train standing in the yard at the time of photography is 2,500 feet long. The number, length, and types of cars in this train cannot be determined. Numerous small buildings and sheds are located along the south side of the yard. Three fenced open storage areas are located between the yard and the straight section of the spur. These storage areas measure approxi- mately 500 x 175 feet. 400 x 125 feet. and 300 x 150 feet, and thus provide a total storage space of slightly more than 180,000 square feet. It includes four one- story single-family housing units, each 25 feet square; five possible two-story eight-family units, each 50 feet square; and two two-story barracks-type buildings, 75 by 30 feet, which probably billet a total of 90 people (100 square feet per person). The small village of about 16 houses, located south of the new housing development, is older and appears not to have been affected by new construction. There are numerous unimproved roads connecting the various facilities at this installation, but there is no visible evidence of a road connecting it to Mariinsk. The purpose of the rail spur cannot be determined at this early stage of construction.
