OMSK, USSR
The Omsk Tank Plant "Voroshilov" 174, located in south-central
Omsk, is one of the major producers of military tanks in the USSR.
The Omsk railroad car repair yard and shops borders the tank plant
on the west and a large thermal power plant and railroad classification
yard borders it on the east. The tank plant, originally a railroad loco-
motive and car repair facility, was converted to tank production during
World War II.
The plant covers an area of approximately 6,300, 000 sq. ft.
(145 acres) and contains 11 large assembly-type buildings, 10 heat
treatment, foundry and fabrication buildings, and numerous warehouses
and small shops. Rail lines entering from the north serve the entire
plant. A wooden fence appears to surround the entire plant, except
possibly along the southern edge where smoke and haze precludes
definite determination of the plant boundary. There is no evidence of
new construction or plant expansion.
Five miles southwest of the tank plant is a military tank maneuver
area which possibly serves as a tank testing area.
