' RAIL TRAFFIC ON THE BREST/MOSCOW RAILROAD
I The 682-mile double-tracked BREST COW railroad (see map appended) was
I photographed in one continuous flight on from approximately 0700 to
0810 Greenwich Civil Time. Ninety miles of this rail line at the Brest end, and
I 25 miles at the Moscow end were obscured by clouds, but the remaining approximately
570 miles were cloud-free.
This memorandum provides photographic analysis of the rail traffic observed on
I this road. Whenever possible, the following information has been obtained: length of
train, nulmber and types of cars,' position of different types of cars in the train,
type 0f locomotive, speed of train, location of train at Greenwich Civil Time, and
I direction of travel. The amount of data obtainable is necessarily limited by the
small scale and varying quality of, the photography.
Only trains in motion or complete trains on sidings are tabulated. Trains
I being made up at several classification yards along the route are not included in
this report. A total of 35 trains and three single locomotives are discernable. In
every. case there appears to be only one locomotive per train. Most of the'locomotives
1 are steam but a few appear to be diesel-type. It can not be determined whether cars
are loaded or empty, or whether there is a caboose at the end of freight trains. The
photography.
The following tabulation lists the data obtainable on each train observed.
