REQUIREMENT RR/HTA/E/RllO/56: Determine the location, numbers,, and dimensions of the various types of equipment existing in the Szony Petroleum Refinery, Komarom, Hungary. Report any evidence of new construction or expansion. The Szony Petroleum Refinery is located on the northern border of Hungary at the village of'S urny., two miles ESE of Komarom, and 100 yards south of the Danube River. It is the largest refinery in Hungary. 25X1 D This refinery sustained considerable bomb damage in 1944 but some production was reportedly taking place again by 1945. photography shows the refinery to be reconstructed on its original p layout. Collateral information indicates that most of this reconstruction was probably accomplished during 1952. A new distillation unit., probably of the vacuum type, has been placed in the southern area of the plant, and three new 90=foot-diameter crude oil storage tanks are under construction in the western section. There is no photographic evidence to indicate that construction has commenced on a re- ported new thermal cracking unit. Transportation is provided byroad, rail, and river barge. Crude oil from the Lispe and Lovaszi oilfields in south- west Hungary is reportedly brought in by pipeline. The major components of the refinery are identified and described on the accompanying annotated photograph. DOCUMENT NO. NO CHANGE IN CLASS.
