Approved For Release 2001709/O~Eg&DP951A000300100027-3 PIC/JU-28/61 NEAR NIZHNYAYA TURA, USSR A deep pit (approximately 58-27N 59-39E), 11.4 nautical miles (nm) southwest of Nizhnyaya Tura, USSR, was studied to determine whether a relationship exists between the pit and the Nizhnyaya Tura Atomic Energy Installation, located approximately 4 nm to the north. It was concluded that the pit is an open-pit mine and has no relationship with the atomic energy installation. The mine was in operation at the time of photograph The size of the mine pit (approximately 770 feet in diameter and an es .mated 80 feet deep), the large amount of tailings, and the height of the vegeta- tion on the sides of the piles of tailings indicate that the mine has been in operation for a -considerable length of time. Facilities at the mine include two secured explosive storage areas and two areas of buildings. An area on the east side of the pit has 13 large buildings of various sizes and numerous smaller buildings. Six small buildings are located in another area on the west side of the pit. Roads lead in three directions from the pit. The most traveled road leads southeastward toward Verkhnyaya Tura. and joins the Kushva/ Nizhnyaya Tura road. Another less-traveled road leads northward toward the Nizhnyaya Tura Atomic Energy Installation. A minor road leads westward to the road system in that direction. The kind of ore mined at the open pit cannot be determined from the photography; however, iron is the principal ore mined in the general area. An iron and steel works is located at Kushva, approximately 1I nm south-southeast of the open pit. Copper and bauxite are also reportedly mined in the area. If the ore from the mine is iron, it is probably trucked by road to the iron and steel works at Kushva. If it is another ore, it is probably trucked by the same road to the railroad on the east side of Verkhnyaya Tura.
