Vlone Bay is the most heavily defended area in. Albania. The accom-
panying map (Fig. 1) shows the following defense positions, most of which
existed in World War II but have since been modernized and are radar-
controlled.
Eight heavy (152 mm) coastal defense positions (four unoccupied).
Three medium (75 mm) coastal defense positions.
One 8-gun medium (85-100 mm) dual purpose battery.
Three 4-gun medium (85-100 mm) dual. purpose batteries.
Four 8-gun medium (85-100 mm) antiaircraft batteries.
Five 6-gun medium (85-100 mm) antiaircraft batteries (one unoccupied).
Four 4-gun medium (85-100 mm) antiaircraft batteries (three unoccupied).
The only new defenses in this area are the five antiaircraft batteries
along the ridge of Karaburun Peninsula. Construction activity commenced in
1 / and by a new 8-mile-long road had been con-
structed and three 8-gun batteries appeared to be complete and occupied. On
photography, an additional 6-gun battery appeared complete and
occupied and another 6-gun position was under construction.. These new anti-
aircraft positions probably were constructed to defend the new Pasha Liman
submarine base at the southern end of Vlone Bay.
