In addition, better coverage on this mission has permitted upgrading to firm launch areas two areas previously identified as probable and possible launch areas, respec- tively. 1/, 2/ The total number of MRBM launch areas in the USSR identified to date s now 48, with a total of 196 pads. These totals include 44 firm launch areas with 176 pads, 3 probable launch areas with 12 pads, and one possible launch area with 8 pads. Of the 48 launch areas, 38 are deployed in pairs. Each of these pairs, together with any associated support facilities, is considered to comprise a launch complex. Partial cloud cover over the other ten launch areas makes it impossible to determine whether they are also deployed in pairs. In accordance with guidance currently suggested by the Guided Missiles and Astronautics Intelligence Committee (GMAIC), these installations will be referred to as MRBM launch areas instead of IRBM/MRBM launch areas, and will bear either the name of the closest populated place appearing on the WAC or in some cases another name designated by GMAIC. Table 1, below, gives the name and location of all 48 areas identified to date.
