AIRFIELD CONSTRUCTION, WUHAN MILITARY REGION, CHINA
1. The People's Republic of China (PRC) has placed heavy
emphasis on airfield construction and improvement in the stra-
tegic Wuhan Military Region (Figure 1) since mid-1966. Seven-
teen of the region's twenty-one major airfields have been in-
volved in the upgrading. Nine of the 17 airfields have been
newly constructed (one is still under construction) and the
other eight have had improvements to runways or to facilities
(Table 1).
2. All 17 airfields have concrete runways. Twelve have
runways over 1,828.8 meters (6,000 feet) in length and are
capable of handling most of the jet aircraft in the present
PRC inventory. Three of the airfields have' underground air-
craft storage areas and a fourth has three hardened aircraft
shelters.
