ABSTRACT
The Sary-Shagan Railroad Station Yards and Shops consist of extensive rail facilities
and an associated housing and administration area. The yards and shops were first
25X1 D observed in The major changes since then have been the abandonment of a
construction support area and the addition of three rail storage spurs.
This report describes the facilities and activity in the yards and shops as observed
on TALENT and KEYHOLE photography from
It contains a location map, a small-scale photograph, a line drawing, and mensural data
on significant structures.
INTRODUCTION
The railroad station yards and shops are in the northern part of the main support
base of the Sary-Shagan Missile Test Center and 6 nautical miles (nm) northeast of
Launch Complex D10-5 (Figure 1). The area presently consists of extensive rail facilities
and an associated housing and administration area (Figures 2 and 3 and Table 1).
The railroad station yards and shops are one of several support facilities within the
main support base. The area was previously designated the initial support area following
25X1 D photography of - because it appeared to be the oldest facility at Sary-Shagan.
BASIC DESCRIPTION
Rail Facilities
The rail facilities consist of two main areas -- the maintenance and repair shops and
the classification and holding yards. One mainline track serving Mointy 65 nm to the
north and Chu 150 nm to the south passes through the railroad station yards and shops.
The only significant change in the rail facilities since as been the addition
of three storage spurs in the northwest sector of the rail yards in the fall of= These
rail spurs appeared to be complete on coverage of
Rail Maintenance and Repair Shops. This area is in the southern end of the railroad
station yards and shops and contains a locomotive repair shop, a rail car repair shop, a
machine shop, a separately secured possible diesel power building, two revetted fuel
storage tanks, six servicing spurs, five repair tracks, and a rail turning wye.
Rail Classification and Holding Yards. These facilities extend approximately 3,500 feet
north-south along the Mointy-Chu rail line. The yards contain four holding tracks, four
classification tracks, and 15 servicing and storage spurs. A siding serving a passenger
station is in the northeast area of the yards. The two longest rail storage spurs serve
open storage areas and extend approximately 3,000 feet to the west of the rail yards.
Rail Activity. Locomotives and various types of rail cars -- passenger, tank, box,
hopper, and gondola -- have been observed in the rail yards on overhead photography.
The number of rail cars observed cannot be related to any specific activity at other
Sary-Shagan installations.
Housing and Administration Area
This area, situated on the east side of the rail yards, contains approximately 130
family-type quarters, 15 barracks buildings, 15 administration buildings, a heatplant, and

several miscellaneous support and personnel buildings. Since the total number 25X1 D
of buildings has increased by approximately 75, and these consist mostly of single-family- 25X1 D
type quarters. Two adjoining waste-disposal basins have been built on the southeast
side of the housing and administration area. One was under construction in

Former Construction Support Area
When the railroad station yards and shops were first photographed in- an
area just southwest of the rail classification and holding yards was being used for trans-
loading and storing various construction materials. This area utilized the t-l.uo rail spurs
which extend westward from the main rail yards. It included open storage areas, two
motor pools, a sawmill, and approximately 30 warehouses and storage buildings. Most
of the construction materials were removed in- and all buildings except four 25X1 D
were dismantled during= The area is presently abandoned.
