The government is sending more reinforcements to strenthen its defenses southwest of Phnom Penh, where the Khmer Communists made some limited gains over the weekend. Efforts by the. Cambodian Army's 3rd Division to reestablish a solid defensive line all along the southwcstern sector made little progress yesterday. To the southeast, the government is redeploying some of its units along the Bassac River to counter increased Communist activity in that area. major fighting has occurred yet on either southern front. A few miles northwest of Phnom Penh, elements of the army's 1st Division--supported by artillery and air strikes--continued to move toward suspected Communist positions on .January 21.
