BIOGRAPHIC SKETCH
Arthur Lundahl was born April 1, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew
up in the immediate environs of Chicago, and attended the University of
Chicago from 1934 to 1942.
In 1942, Mr. Lundahl was commissioned an Ensign, USNR, and received
training as a photo interpreter. He saw wartime service as a P.I. in the
United States and the Northern Pacific.
At the end of the war, Mr. Lundahl converted to Navy civilian status
at his last duty station, and remained working at the U.S. Naval Photographic
Interpretation Center, Washington, D. C. from 1946 through 1953. From
1946 to 1947 he was the Chief of the Photogrammetry Division. From late
1947 through 1953 he served as Assistant Chief Engineer, the Center's
second most senior"civilian position.
In 1953, Mr. Lundahl joined the Central Intelligence Agency and
organized the Agency's first photo interpretation capability. In early 1961,
by National Security Council direction, Mr. Lundahl's organization was
redesignated the National Photographic Interpretation Center, and the
Director of CIA, with the concurrence of the Secretary of Defense, appointed
him its first Director. The National Photographic Interpretation Center
is jointly manned by CIA and DIA personnel. It occupies a six-storied
building in the Washington Navy Yard uniquely designed for imagery exploita-
tion activities. It employs more than 1200 people. Arthur Lundahl is.
entering his eleventh year as its Director.
Mr. Lundahl is married, has two children, and lives in suburban
Bethesda, Maryland.
