This is a somewhat belated reply to your letter of October 4, which was
brought to me by an agency representative. We are much pleased by the decision
to declassify the fact that a contractual relationship exists between the Agency
and the University for certain research services. We note the substance of the
response which should be made from the University ilquestioned about the rela-
tionship or about this particular project. It is indeed almost identical with the
reply we make when asked about classified projects supported by one of the de-
fense agencies, of which there are currently 87.
It would be my suggestion, however, that we do not now go back and revise
the present contract, because there are only a few months to run, and to revise
it does to a degree spotlight it. Instead, when the matter of renewal or extension
arises, we would proceed to handle it according to established procedures for
classified contracts. In the meantime, and on current project and sponsor list-
ings, no change would be made. We will review with you the text of any written
reference to the contract prior to publication of that reference, though I do not
anticipate any such specific reference other than the listing of an agreed unclas-
sified title and the name of the sponsor.
