John,
In discussions withi regarding lamps for
rear projection viewers, it appears that the high perfor-
mance desired from the viewers is being limited by the
quality of the lamps. John would like me to look into
this for him and I will be glad to do it if you approve.
Enclosed is a work statement which would authorize the work
to be done on the present contract. The material purchase
authorization is necessary to permit buying some sample
lamps. I will discuss specific lamps with John and buy
those items as agreed are necessary. If he has any lamps
in his spares stock which would be suitable, I could use
those and would therefore not have to buy them. With my
invoices I will include for your signature a page itemizing
the material purchases. I estimate this will total a few
hundred dollars at most. I don't think any power supplies
are needed as I believe we can get our information from
the lamps cold.

Proposed Amendment to Contract
Add Item 5 to Task II of the contract with no change in
contract funding or.delivery:
5. Optical-Mechanical Properties of Rear-Projector
Light Sources.
Obtain and evaluate manufacturer's information re-
garding the optical-mechanical properties of various
light sources to determine relative suitability to rear-
projection viewer applications. Light sources to be
considered are: Tungsten, Quartz Iodine, Mercury Arc
and Xenon Arc lamps. The investigation will be concerned
principally with lamp power levels of approximately 1000
watts. Relative reliability and life will be part of the
consideration of suitability
Add authorization to purchase direct materials:
Purchase of direct materials as required for perfor-
mance of the contract is authorized. Purchase of
materials must be approved by the Technical Representative
of the contracting officer. Material will be invoiced
at cost.
