ask #02 - Photobleach Photo-
graphy, (Final Visit)
1. A meeting was held at thel
on 10 November 1966
to review the progress on the Photobleach Program. Iwas re-

2. The contractor had, previous to this meeting, received
official notification from the Government that this effort would
be terminated with the expiration of the current task on 30 November
1966. There was considerable discussion regarding the reasons for
the termination, after having spent a two year effort in a field
that had understood would be a long range research effort. I
explained that there had been changes in organization, policies,
and in economic pressures, plus the fact that progress on the
project had not been as great as had been expected.

ject manager, asked me if the termination was ir,.reversable. I
informed him that the decision was final; but that proposals for
further study would be considered, provided significant progress
justified such action.
1. A discussion was then held on possible company sponsored
efforts in this field. This action was mentioned in the letter
from our contracting officer, directing termination. I explained
to them that we would be willing to authorize retention by them of
equipment that had been procured from Government funds for Contract
acne from their company sponsored efforts. This will be considered
Declass Review by NGA.

and they will advise us of their decision. In the discussion it
was pointed out by the Government representative that
(DIAZO) Materials now available had photographic properties ex-
ceeding those properties shown in the photobleach method and that,
should they be able to show the photobleach method to be greatly
superior to the Omethod, their proposals for further effort
was not aware that had reached this technical. level and
requested, that if possible, he be furnished samples of the material
involved. Accordingly, the project monitor will obtain the samples
for him.

5. was concerned that their development and findings
to date had not been optimized and suggested a moderate Government
sponsored effort of about 0 over a six month period to optimize
the present system. The answer to this suggestion was that NPIC would
not be interested in such a proposal because of the obvious superiority
of the material at this time.
6. Inasmuch as there is no additional time for research and
development on this task, a review of the technical accomplishments
on this effort was held. was recently supplied a 70mm aerial
print, a 228 line resolution target, and a 21 step gray scale. These
were used to evaluate the current status of the effort and will be
retained by =ror use in the final report, which is due the first
week of December 1966.

As reported in progress report #13 of 14 October 1966, a new
alcohol soluable butyrate polymer has been obtained from 25
which, when combined with the new trimethylinoaliline dye, exhibits
much better photographic characteristics than any other polymer dye
combination. Examination of tests performed with this material shows
a resolution capability of at least 204 lines per mm when exposed to
a 228 line target, and it will reproduce as many as 14 steps of a
21 step gray scale. Although the resulting color of a reproduction
on'this material is blue, it appeared that none of the detail in the
furnished aerial print had been lost. One other recent-advance in
this material is a coating on opaque paper. There is attached sample
prints made with this coating on both mylar and paper. These are very
crude coatings and in the case of paper represents the first attempt.
The exposure for the film and paper was 15 and 30 seconds respectively
with a 300 watt source. The material was fixed to prevent any further
bleaching by heating for eight minutes at 105?C.

7. In summary the following were agreed to:
a. NPIC will furnish samples of the lI material
tc for comparison tests.
b. The resolution target, gray scale, and aerial print
recently furnished =by NPIC will be retained by them for use
in preparing the final report on Contract II Task #2.
c. =Will prepare and furnish NPIC an informal list
of Government owned property acquired on this project, to-
gether with recommendations, if any, on transfer of the
property to another task under the same contract.
d. will give consideration to further,effort on
photobleac under in-house sponsorship, possibly including
use of Government owned property and will advise NPIC.
e. will endeavor to obtain technical data on the
DIAZO) material and will prepare comparison
.!_ charts showing the important parameters of photobleach
and DIAZO materials and furnish copy of charts to NPIC.
