In the particular example with which this process was demonstrated, the film consisted of polyvinylalcohol, the dye was Astrazon Pink FG, and the azide was potassium azide. Considerably more azide than dye was used. Upon exposure to a mercury lamp emitting the 2537 A line, the dye was bleached from a deep pink to colorless. Tungsten lamps do not affect the film. The mechanism of the process seems to be that the azide decomposes to form a base which reacts with the dye to bleach it. This is in contrast to the similar process using iodoform or related compounds, in which acid seems to be formed. In the case of the dye mentioned above, acid changes the dye color to yellow, as does photobleaching with iodoform, while base turns it colorless, as does the photobleaching with azide. Consequently, this process should be useful with all dyes that change color upon addition of base. 0 25X1 25X1 It is not known as yet whether the nature of the polymer affects the process. It may be that the hydroxyl groups of the polyvinylalcohol used are necessary for the production of base. Further experiments are needed to determine this. 25X1 Conceived: 10/15/65 Reduced to Practice: 11/3/65 Read and understoodi 25X1 Approved For Release 2005/11/21 : CIA-RDP78BO477OA00280003001 -7 Approved Foelease 2005/11/21 : CIA-RDP78B0402800030012-7 4/23/65 55,-;o.8768 -65 5155-4ioo 5155-14 10=a NPTP 3 Copies f .)r UPIC ?:;u-Reversal Recording Fe . ib: Study in aecordatnee with Propo for ftaae II; dated 12 Feb. 1965.
