MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Technical Services & Support Group, NPIC
SUBJECT: Evaluation of the Wooden Mock-Up of the Advanced
Rhomboid by IEG
1. On 30 July 1968 a. briefing for the Imagery Exploitation Group
was presented in the IEG Teleprompter Room. The result of that brief-
ing indicated a. general acceptance of the preliminary design of the
Advanced Rhomboid Model II.
2. In reviewing the design of the rhomboids, two problems became
evident which actually are not inadequacies in the rhomboid configura-
tion but will have to be considered in the Split Format Light Table
design.
a.) The microscope mount and X ca.rria.ge must be of suffi-
cient strength and rigidity to support the Zoom 240 Micro-
scope and Advanced Rhomboid in a. plane parallel to the light
table's surface. The present 940 MCE and 940 MC light tables
are not stable enough for mounting the new microscope and
rhomboids. These tables will be obsolete when the new rhom-
boids are received. The 940 Split Format Light Table and
the 1540 Split Format Light Tables will be the only equip-
ment available in the numbers required upon which the=
240 Microstereoscope/Advanced Rhomboid combination can be
mounted.
b) There was inadequate clearance between the rhomboid arms
and the horizontal stabilizer bar of the 940 Split Format
Light Table. When the rhomboid arm was extended in the Y
direction it was located too close to the bar. Although the
working distance for the rhomboid objective may not have
been precisely set, the clearance was still considered in-
sufficient.
3. As has been stated, the preliminary design of the rhomboid

totype rhomboid when it is received. Your coordination of this
