SUBJECT: Binary Annotation System (BAS)on

Photography
1. The Southeast Asia Branch has exploited thousands of low and medium
level reconnaissance missions which image a Binary Annotation System (BAS) or
code block on the film and the Branch has seldom had to use the system. However,
there are many circumstances in which a data block of some type would be extremely
useful as a time saving device.
2. Because the Southeast Asia Branch has been exploiting photography
over Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand for several years and has developed
a very intimate knowledge of targets and terrain features, it is believed that
the installation of such a system in the program is unnecessary as
long as it continues to be programmed against these countries. If a situation
were to arise , which would require an overflight of another more unfamiliar
country, a data block would be very desirable.
3. The type of information most used by the photo interpreter in order
of frequency are the
Any system developed should make these items immediately available. The
system, which now uses dots in a small block on the film, is less desirable than
a direct printout of the information, but is better than nothing at all. The
most desirable method of displaying is best seen
on photography; however, the
The current display on photography is
satisfactory. Neither of the two systems record on the film.
4. The photo interpreter does not perform precise computer mensuration from
the imagery and any further information on this subject is best presented by TSSG.
