25th MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT
Image Enhancement Program
Contrac~ (Task Order No. 1
1 December 1962 to 18 January 1963
During the period covered by this report work has- proceeded in
accordance with the program outlined in the previous monthly with the
following minor alteration: Phase A, the continuation of the laboratory
experimentation, -and Phase B, packaging for delivery have been com-
bined in order to effect more economy.
Just prior to disrnantling the laboratory setup in preparation for
cabinet installation, a number of tests were run which indicated sa-
tisfactory results with regard to the overall uniformity and fidelity of
the input and output scanning functions. The enclosed photographs are
prints which illustrate the performance which was achieved. Print A
is a photographic reproduction of the image which was scanned. Prints
B and C are reproductions of the original negative material from the
camera which photographed the output cathode ray tube. The enhance-
ment circuitry was adjusted to achieve area ,scan filtering effects which
are clearly evident in the photograph B. Print C was made without area
scan filtering and only electronic high pass filtering, In both prints
B and C the contrast of the smaller detail is increased wh11e the con-
trast of large detail is decreased.
Work is currently under way on mounting all of the equipment in
the console. It has ben found possible to mount the output cathode
ray tube immediately behind the front panel of the console in the area
formerly reserved exclusively for control. This has been achieved by
rearranging same of the electronics and will permit more ready access

and convenient operation. It is expected that the packaged equipment
will be in operation in early February thus permitting a resumption of
the evaluation experiments. Our schedule for in-plant acceptance of
the equipment to be delivered is 28 February 1963.
