Highlights of activity observed during this reporting period include the following: 1. SA-2 missile activity 2. Cruise-missile activity 3. Airfield activity 4. Port activity 5. Electronics activity 6. Military activity SA-2 Missile Activity (Figures 1 and 2) Conversion of unrevetted SAM sites to perma- nent sites and utilization of adjacent temporary sites during the construction phase occurred at the following sites: La Catalina La Salud Campo Florido Guara MAAt~i J E L .2 P~U-N r 2 8 R A-V A Pa PLOPI MANAGUA - A:CA'CALINA MAa ANA 2 A 1 La Cachimba Ranchuelo Constancia SAM sites that remained unrevetted are as follows: Alquizar Majana 2 Santiago de Cuba Holguin Los Angeles Permanent revetted facilities were constructed at the following SAM sites: Punta Brava Santa Isabel de las Lajas Santa Fe San Pedro de Cacocum 2 No apparent change in launch and support facilities was observed at the following SAM sites: Holguin Los Angeles Maldonado Palma Soriano San Diego del Valle SAM Site. As of the original 25X1 D site remained under construction and the temporary site remained occupied. La Salud SAM Site. The original site was vacated and an adjacent, temporary field-type site was observed on 2 launch positions 25X1 D and 1 missile-hold position at the original site were in the early stage of being revetted. As of the original site remained in the late stage of construction and the tempo- rary site remained occupied (Figure 3). Santa Clara SAM Site. La Cachimba SAM Site. On 1 1 launcher was removed and the central guidance area was partially vacated. The original site was completely vacated on - , and a temporary field-type site was established 0.2 nm east-northeast. As of ? , the original site remained in the late stage of construction and the temporary site remained occupied. Mariel SAM Site 2. Three missile-hold po- sitions were in the initial stage of construction on No temporary field-type site was observed during this reporting period. Preston SAM Site. All missile-associated equipment was removed on The site remains abandoned. Alquizar SAM Site. This site was vacated but subsequently was returned to operational status. 25X1 D Siguanea SAM Site. This site was partially vacated on , and approxi- mately 15 probable missile canisters and 50 cargo trucks remained. Santa Fe SAM Site. First identified on= , this site was unrevetted and appeared to be temporary. On the same date, a revetted site was observed 0.4 nm east-southeast consisting of 6 launch revetments, 1 missile-hold revetment, and 1 other revetment, all apparently in the midstage of construction. This site will probably replace Siguanea SAM Site (Figure 4). San Pedro de Cacocum SAM Site 1. This site was first identified on 25X1 D ort facilities include 2 bar- h su _ Althou 25X1 D pp g racks and 5 support buildings, it is apparently a temporary field-type site (Figure 5). San Pedro de Cacocum SAM Site 2. First identified on this site consisted of 1 completed launch revetment, 5 launch revetments in the early-to-midstage of construction, and 1 missile-hold revetment under construction (Figure 6). No missile- associated vehicles or equipment was observed. This site will probably replace San Pedro de Cacocum SAM Site 1. Majana SAM Site 1. _ all launch and guidance equipment was removed and the site has not been reoccupied. Majana SAM Site 2. Five launch positions and the central guidance area were vacated on and all missile-associated vehicles and equipment were removed on - The site was reoccupied on W 25X1 D 25X1 D 25X1 D 25X1 D 25X1 D 25X1 D 25X1 D For the first time, a dummy SAM Site was 25X1 D reported in Cuba. On a dummy site was observed 1.1 nm south-south- east of La Salud consisting of 6 dummy missiles on props in a circular pattern, a simulated central guidance area, and a missile-hold area with 2 dummy missiles. No prime movers, vehicles, radar, or other missile-associated equipment was observed (Figure 7). Victoria de las Tunas SAM Assembly Area. 25X1 D On the site was vacated and remained abandoned throughout the reporting period. La Veguita SAM Assembly Area. This SAM assembly area was first identified on M . The vehicles and equip- ment were probably brought from Victoria de las Tunas SAM Assembly Area. The 2 SAM training areas, Santiago and El Cano, remained active; however, no unusual activity was observed during this reporting period. Cruise-Missile Activity The following installations were active during this reporting period: Guanajay Cruise-Missile Site Siguanea Cruise-Missile Site Santa Cruz del Norte Cruise-Missile Site Guanabo Cruise-Missile Site San Jose de las Lajas Cruise-Missile Storage Airfield Activity Airfield activity was generally routine during this reporting period. San Antonio de los Banos remained the primary military airfield in Cuba. a maximum number of aircraft including 37 FISHBED, 3 FARMER, and 18 FAGOT/FRESCO were observed at this airfield. On 1 partially assembled COKE and 2 COKE fuselages were observed at Campo Libertad Airfield. This is the first time that COKE aircraft have been observed in Cuba. On = a PF of the U.S. Takoma class was ap- proximately 200 feet offshore at La Fe Port Facilities. The vessel had been partially dismantled and 2 large cylindrical tanks were on the stern. 25X1 D Photography of revealed 25X1 D no change. the PF - NPIC L-5205 (9/66) 25X1 D Electronics Activity Three EW/GCI radar sites were first identified during this reporting period. On 0 25X1 D Los Angeles Radar Site 25X1 D 1, located immediately northeast of Los Angeles SAM Site, was observed consisting of 1 TOKEN radar, 1 van truck, and 6 van trailers. Holguin EW/GCI Radar Site 2, located 0.2 nm southeast of Holguin Airfield, was ob- served consisting of 1 TOKEN-type radar, 1 van trailer, and 1 associated building on E The site was vacated on and the equipment was probably moved to the original, reactivated Holguin EW/GCI Radar Site at the northeast 25X1 D and 1 large freighter anchored alongside were observed approximately 15 nm west-northwest of Siguanea off the Isla de Pinos. All 5 hatches were open on the freighter and part of the super- structure was apparently removed. The original site now contains 1 BAR LOCK early warning radar, 1 ROCK CAKE/STONE CAKE height- finding radar, 1 FLAT FACE radar, 4 van trucks, and 14 van trailers. San Antonio de los Banos EW/GCI Radar Site 2 was observed 0.5 nm north-northeast of San Antonio de los Banos on 25X1 D SM. The site then consisted of 1 BAR LOCK radar, 1 probable ROCK CAKE/ STONE CAKE radar, 6 van trucks, 4 van trailers, and 2 large and 1 medium Soviet tent. The site was vacated Also of interest were 6 EW/GCI radar sites where radar and associated equipment were re- moved. Since radar or associated equipment has been observed at Santiago de Cuba EW/GCI Radar Site. The only activity observed was the presence of car o and utility trucks. the site contained 1 trace prime movers, 39 cargo trucks, and 5 van trucks. Camaguey EW/GCI Radar Site was aban- doned on . No radar or associated equipment was observed on at Santa Fe EW/GCI Radar Site, which consisted of 2 occupied 3-gun light AAA sites and 3 van trucks. Military Activity Military activity was generally routine and the Order of Battle remained relatively unchanged. a military alert was imposed in Cuba. Photo ra hic coverage during evealed that all military camps in Oriente Province were either partially or completely vacated. The camps were subsequently reoccupied and normal activity resumed. A re- view of the area surrounding the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo revealed no new military installations or unusual activity. Construction of drive-through, arched-roof bunkers was observed at the following installations: Cuabitas Military Camp La Charca Military Activity Limonar Military Camp Southeast Santa Ana Military Storage Area Reactivated or newly identified installations are as follows: Chorrera de Managua Military Camp West La Charca Military Activity Santa Ana Military Storage Area San Antonio de los Banos Military Camp The following installations were either vacated or abandoned: Artemisa Military Camp Banao Military Camp Camaguey Military Camp Ceiba Mocha Military Area Corralillo Military Area Heredia Military Camp Marti Armor Training Area Santa Clara Military Activity Santa Isabel Finca Military Camp Zaragoza Military Camp References Photography from flown between was used in the prepara- tion of this report.
