The series is being coordinated, published and disseminated by NP IC. The photographic analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group, the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production Center 1Plc (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re- port was performed by the Production Center 1P lc. In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report. Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips, (D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am- munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields, (L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/ assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train- ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified facilities or tracking activity. - I Handle Via Approved For Release 2000/08/21 : CIA-RDP78BO456OA002500010~~ahha-KEY"oLE t.dhol~ystem Only TOP SECRET RUFF HandleRraroved For Releasl U A1ETC 46P78B04560A002500010054-2 TALENT-KEYHOLE Control System Only 25X1A 25X1A Approved For Release 2000/08/21 : CIA-RDP78B04560A002500ldngl TCS-7846/64 WIC/R-825/64 MILITARY TRAINING AREA (50-11N 028-34E) ZHITOMIR, ZHITOMIRSKAYA OBLAST, USSR CARPATHIAN MD 25X1 C Control System Only TOP SECRET RUFF l\pprmved For Release 2000/08% P C1A D'P'78804560AO02500010054-2 TALENT-KEYHOLE Control System Only TCS-7846/64 NPIC/R-825/64 25X1A 25X1A This military training area, which covers approximately 28,000 acres, is located 11 kil- ometers southwest of Zhitomir (Figure 1). Zhitomir Army Barracks South _ is adjacent to the eastern edge of the training area. The installation is not directly rail served, but rail service is available at Zhitomir Army Barracks South. Road service is provided by secondary roads from Zhitomir and from the barracks. Facilities at the training area consist of one tracked-vehicle driver-training area, two wheeled-vehicle driver-training courses, six small-arms ranges, three tank/assault-gun fir- ing ranges, and a probable combined-arms field training area. Located to the rear of the tank/ assault-gun firing ranges are two probable ve- hicle maintenance buildings and several C- shaped buildings which may be used for small unit administration during bivouac on the ranges. A comparative study of KEYHOLE photog- raphy from reveals 25X1 D no major changes in the training area except the addition of two small-arms ranges. The training area appears to receive heavy usage during the summer months. -photography reveals light usage in the vicinity of the tank/ assault-gun firing ranges, but none in any of the other areas. 25X1 D DESCRIPTION OF INSTALLATION Railroad Service Rail service for the training area is avail- able at Zhitomir Army Barracks South, which is adjacent to the eastern edge of the training area. The barracks is served by a spur from the Zhitomir-Berdichev railroad. Road service is provided by secondary roads from Zhitomir and the barracks area. Aircraft Landing Strip There are no landing strips in the training area; however, Zhitomir/Skomorokhi Airfield is located approximately 4 kilometers from the training area. Administrative and Troop Housing Area Administrative and logistic support are probably provided by Zhitomir Army Barracks South. Other Buildings There are four C -shaped buildings with 110- by 50-foot bases and 50- by 50-foot wings behind each of the tank/assault-gun firing ranges. They are probably administration buildings for unit bivouac areas. Possible tent areas are observed adjacent to three of these buildings in Area N1. Twelve various-sized buildings in the vicinity of the tank/assault-gun firing ranges are probably used for range support. Equipment Storage/Maintenance Areas Area J1 and Area J2 each has a C-shaped building with a 500- by 70-foot base and 150- by 70-foot wings. These are probably vehicle maintenance buildings. There is one in the vicinity of each tank/assault-gun firing range. Small-Arms Firing Ranges Areas L1, L2, L3, and L6 are 300- by 75-foot small-arms firing ranges. Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges Area Ni is a 5,100-foot firing range with ten 1,600-foot lanes, ten 2,800-foot lanes, and 17 moving targets. Area N2 is a 4,500-foot firing range with eight 2,500-foot lanes, two 1,500-foot lanes, and 12 moving targets. Area N3 is a 5,200-foot firing range with seven 4,800-foot lanes. All tank assault-gun firing ranges were first observed in Combined-Arms Field Training Area Area R contains numerous ground scars and is probably a combined-arms field train- ing course.
