MINING ACTIVITY AT ALEKSANDRIYA, USSR Approved For Relea~~ ~01~ CIA-~8B04560A000800010070-3 NPIC/R-215/63 MINING ACTIVITY AT ALEKSANDRIYA, USSR The Aleksandriya mining activity (48-38N 33-04E), located approximately 44 nautical miles (nm) northwest of Krivoy Rog, CJSSR, is an ex- tension of the ore and coal mining of the Dnepr River Basin (Figure 1). A comparison of this activity with known Soviet uranium mines 1/ re- veals no apparent similarities. The mining of brown coal or iron ore appears to be a more likely purpose of this activity. The mining activity at Aleksandriya is divided into two separate areas, designated Areas A and B (Figure 2). Each of these areas contains an open-pit mine with processing facili- ties and is supported by thermal power plants and extensive housing. The facilities within Areas A and B are all road and rail served. Area A is located 3.6,nm southwest of the center of Aleksandriya. It contains an open- pit mine, approximately 1.5 nm in length and .8 nm in width. The pit is extensively mined at the northern perimeter. Facilities include a traveling crane and a building approximately 300 by 75 feet for sorting and screening. An enclosed conveyer connects this building with a sintering building which is approximately 500 by 100 feet. Several stacks are discernible on the roof of the sintering building. East of this building is a single-stack thermal power plant. A second single-stack thermal power plant is located at the eastern edge of a reser- voir. A waste dump, approximately .8 nm by .4 nm, is 1.3 nm northeast of the open-pit mine. This dump, probably for ash residue, is also road and rail served. Area B is located 6.5 nm southwest of Aleksandriya. It contains an open-pit mine measuring approximately 1.6 nm in length and one nm in width. A traveling crane is visible at the southeastern end of the mine. This end has been mined deeper than the surrounding area. A building, approximately 1,100 by 120 feet, for sorting and screening is connected by a conveyer to a sintering building, approxi- mately 1,450 by 180 feet. Six stacks are dis- cernible on the roof of the sintering building. East of this building is a two-stack thermal power plant with a possible cooling tower. Several small buildings support the facility.
