Approved For Release 2911/07/30: Cl, CONFIDENTIAL 23 August 1965 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Training SUBJECT: Weekly Report #23: Defense Intelligence School (DIS) 16 August - 20 August 1965 1. A copy of the training plan approved by Colonel Wallace for the Advanced Intelligence Course is attached. This particular copy was obtained for suggested use by the Executive Secretary, TSB and the OTR Registrar in obtaining and screening CIA candidates for later runnings of the course. 2. References to Agency speakers which follow pertain to the Civilian Analyst Course. 3. jointly presented a seminar on The Analytic Process. One of the faculty monitors observed to me that more learning appeared to take place in this one-hour session than had occurred during a three-hour exercise conducted by representatives of the HRB Singer consultant group. The latter put on an interesting show, but I agree that the learning outcomes were dubious. 4. The Communications Exercise was successfully run by - notwithstanding a flash downpour which distracted from their planned summary. To our surprise, four of the five groups completed the exercise during the allotted time. Two successful solutions out of five groups are normally anticipated. 5. Several OTR instructors re-appeared as guest lecturers. - coverage of Indications Analysis didn't come off as well as he had hoped it would. It was one of those first-period hours and the young student body remained uncommitted. In defense, I attribute much of the difficulty to the physical fact that we lacked water; and the broken main had affected the working condition of coffee machines and plumbing as well as the student body. 6. combined his Friday's practical exercise on Propaganda Analysis with his earlier subject appearance on intelligence Writing. He agreed to evaluate the student efforts on both the analysis and written English aspects. I'll get the corrected papers back to the alt:: ?; ; xprdveC41 Release 2001/07/30: CIA-RQ 78-060 A0005OQ 00112-0 Approved For Release 20O W07/30: CIA- _LL 96A00050004Q 12-0 SUBJECT: Weekly Report #23: Defense Intelligence School (DIS) class tomorrow? For a rough comparison with efforts of our own Career Trainees, we decided that Dave would score the exercise in terms of the W-A-P-S-O rating scale. 7. The Ready Review gadget prepared by the Intelligence Orientation 25X1A Faculty seems to be very good. - gave me a complete set, and I 25X1A understand were responsible for putting the questions together for-the Intelligence Orientation Review. I believe I can use the set sparingly, but meaningfully, at the DIS. For example, our CIA .lectures for Attaches occur at the very beginning of the 14-week course and again at the very end, when the Attache class meets jointly with the Strategic Intelligence class. Invariably, the late arrivals to, or early departures from, the full Attache class miss one segment of Agency presentations. When and as the Attache department deems it appropriate, I can cover--with aid of the IOF handy review--some of the needed topics on a tutorial basis.
