FROM : Acting Chief, Language Training School
SUBJECT: Weekly Activities Report No. 24
A. SIGNIFICANT ITEMS
None to report.
E. OTHER ACTIVITIES
1. Pending receipt of the complete annotated
machine runs from DDP, attached is an interim report
on the intensive Spanish testing which was given
2 through 9 August. The report is broken down by
Division, and, for the 95 persons who were tested
during this period, shows the number claiming a
speaking proficiency and the number of tested
proficiencies at each level.
It should be noted that, due to characteristics
of the machine run, there are no entries in the "Claimed"
column under "2 - Elementary;" those claiming a profi-
ciency at the 1 and 2 levels are both included under
"1 - Slight."
In WH Division, for example, 5 people claimed
a Native level in speaking; 3 High; 17 Intermediate;
and 12 Elementary/Slight. When tested, it was found
that 8 had Native speaking proficiency; 3 High;
7 Intermediate; 10 Elementary; 6 Slight; and 6 no
speaking proficiency. (Three candidates had not
appeared as having claimed speaking proficiency in
the 30 June machine run; all three of these individuals
were tested as being at the Native level.)

2. The DDP intensive French testing will be
conducted 8 - 15 September. Schedules are now being
made up for distribution to the Divisions concerned.
A briefing will be held on 27 August for the native
speakers who are to serve on the testing panels.

completing an 8-week intensive program at Michigan
State University, East Lansing. He studied Bemba
(the language of-Zambia) and also took two linguistic
courses. While there he also attended many of the
sessions of the summer institute of the Linguistic
Society of America held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and
increased his contacts with other Africanists in the
country.
