B. OTHER ACTIVITIES
25X1A 1. , Assistant Director, OCR,
25X1A contacted to request an estimate of training
time required for developing a functional reading
knowledge of scientific and technical Russian. He
explained that this was wanted for long-range planning
purposes.
25X1A 2. Office of Research and
Development, again consulted DC/LTS and 25X1A
regarding a project on Russian dialect detection.
This project, mentioned in a previous Weekly Report,
is aimed at detecting the place of origin of speakers
of Russian, and has already been contracted out to
Professors Edmund Stan Kiewicz and Howard Aronson of
the University of Chicago. made 25X1A
some suggestions, of linguistic nature and otherwise,
25X1A for improvement of the design of the project, which
- noted for possible use.
3. Four Romanian oral tests were given as part
of the intensive testing program. This completes the
Headquarters backlog in the language with the exception
of one employee who was on vacation and one who was
ill during the testing sessions, and one employee who
did not wish to be tested during this session.

4. The Chinese Familiarization Course is being
run for the 23rd time this week. as usual, 25X1A
is teaching the language part of this course.
5. On 23 November our second training class
will begin, for five new instructors: two for French,
one each for Greek, Danish and Swedish.
will use Spanish as the teaching medium, assisted by

used as proved successful with the Chinese instructors.
6. EE reports that it will very likely have
6-8 students for six months of full-time German
training beginning in January.
