Office ' Memorandum ' UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO Director of Training THRU : Chief, Operations School, OTR DATE: 28 March 1962 FROM : Chief, Training Assistance Staff, Operations School suBJECT: Weekly Activity Report 7,`12 22 - 28 March 1962 A. SIGNIFICANT ITEMS: None to report. B. OTHER ITEMS: 1. INTELLIGENCE TERMS IN ARABIC: More than a year ago NEE Division spoke to us about having one of their Headquarters staff agents translate our Selected List of Intelligence Terms into Arabic. We agreed, but heard nothing further from NE. On 23 March of NE 25X1A9a phoned to say that he had been assigned the task of pushing through this translation and asked if OTR had any objection to the project. He wants to give the F'ench version of the glossary to a field asset to translate. Because of the document1s 25X1A9a SECRET classification, Mr. will deliver it to the agent 25X1A9a in bits and pieces. We referred Mr. - to CI/OA for approval and requested copies of the finished product. During the past few weeks _ has been devoting substantial time and effort to clearing the way for PM class #3ts trip to 25X1A6a In the process he compiled a file of all pertinent documents and cables, together with memos for the record cover- ing each of the many and occasionally tortuous steps in the process of administrative preparation. This file will be of substantial value to whoever handles this task for the next group. Meanwhile, "Pop" and the trainees are ready to go and, 25X1A barring any last-minute complications, will be flying the at 0500 hours on 1 April. 3. JCS GLOSSARY OF COUNTERINSURGENCY TERMS: As reported last week, we have recently had a number of requests from various components of the Armed Services for the Approved For Release 2001/08/10 : CIA-RDP78-06084A000300010005-6 Approved For Reledst!f 2001/08/10 : CIA-RDP78-06084A000300010005-6 25X1A book were sent to CC/OS, OH OS that the JCS adopted verbatim our definitions 25X1A 25X1A Glossary of Operational Terminology. We attribute this sudden upsurge to the requirement levied on the DOD to produce a draft glossary of counterinsurgency terms for inter-agency discussion. Also as reported last week we received the JCSts version in thermofax with a request for 25X1A comments. (There was a SNAFU in the mails and Ben had to send us a second copy, though the first finally arrived. This, with the approval of C/OS, we sent to We are planning 25X1A6a to have more copies made before the thermofax fades away, and will send one to DTR.) Ben, in his Southern Gentlemanly manner, said he would like us to confine our comments to substance; in less diplomatic terms, l{Dontt nitpick the syntax.'# With a gargantuan effort we controlled our impulse to remove the Hand/or t s n and the "to include t s " and limited ourselves to pointing out what we considered. diversities in Agency and Pentagon interpretation.
