Subject: Request for Comments on a Proposed Federal Information Processing Standard
on Subsets of the Code for Information Processing
To: Federal Departments and Independent Offices
Attached are a draft FIPS PUB and specifications for three graphic subsets
which have been prepared by FIPS Task Group 3 (Subsets, Sign Conventions
and Packing Techniques) and by the NBS Office of Information Processing
Standards. These are forwarded for your review and comment prior to
their being recommended to the Bureau of the Budget for adoption as
Federal Information Processing Standards.
If you find that you cannot concur with these proposals, please indicate
what specific changes are considered necessary to satisfy your require-
ments. Also, please indicate to what extent the proposal is applicable
to the data systems within your organization and provide a statement as
to the implementation impact and potential benefits to be derived from
the use of this proposed standard. Also please identify those applica-
tions in your organization which are not satisfied by the provisions
of this proposal and indicate what subsets are necessary in these instances.
Any problems which you may foresee in the implementation of this proposed
standard should be described. Further, please indicate the number of
copies of the standard needed by your organization when these are published
and made available for distribution. (These will be distributed on a sales
basis by the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office.)
It is planned that the present policy of using arbitrarily selected subsets
in lieu of the full standard code set be replaced by a policy of using discrete
subsets, each fully implemented. The purposes of the proposed change are
(1) to enhance the interchange of information among systems employing
graphic subsets and (2) to facilitate the reassignment of equipment con-
tained in the Federal inventory which utilizes subsets of the standard
code.
Please return your comments as soon as possible but not later than two
months from the date of this letter.
If you have questions or wish to arrange a meeting on the subject, please
contact Mr. J. L. Little, Center for Computer Sciences and Technology,
National Bureau of Standards, telephone IDS code 164, extension 3545.
