SUBJECT: Graphics Register Report For First Quarter
Fiscal Year 1964
1. On September 23-2591 Chief
Branch, traveled to
relative to their changing personnel and pro-
curement procedures effecting Agency support.
2. In August of the Analysis Section, Photo Branch,
traveled to Fort Bragg to review slides taken by a member of the
Sth Special Forces Group when stationed in the USSR in 1959. Among
177 slides reviewed were good shots of the Volga-Don Canal facilities,
the Stalingrad area, the Kiev' Airport Terminal and a ssible SA-1
SAN site in the Kiev area. In September, visited the
Atomic Energy Headquarters in Germantown to rev ew slides taken
by Dr. Arnold Fritsch while in the USSR with the AEC Chairman, Dr.
Glen Seaborg.

7. CR has taken procurement action for the accessioning of films from medical audio-visual facilities
for the Agency Medical Staff' a study of mewl illness and behavior. Motion picture films on safety
are being provided for the use of BSA in the Agency's building accident prevention drive.
Graphics Register has received 1,250 photos and slides from various exchange delegations to the
USSR: 1) Meteorology Exchange ? 40 slides; 2) Dairy Exchange - 89 slides; 3) Veterinary Public
Reaith - 726 slides and photos; 4) Mechanization in Construction - 395 slides.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is being furnished three or four Spanish language films per
week (over a 16 week period) to be utilized in the training of agents working in the Cuba-Latin

Under a current DD/P procedure the intelligence community is alerted by withat items of high
priority interest have been photographed and that copies of the photograp sswl1 be disseminated
directly to Agency and USIB offices by Graphics Register under the report series.
During this quarter the Photo branch captioned and reproduced the pbotographic. enclosures for 23

8. Graphics Register supplied 8x10 photographic prints of four Soviet trawlers for a DCI briefing
of the National Security Council. Two of the trawlers were Lnvolved in last year's missile tests
in the Johnston Island area and two were recently under surveillance an the U. S. Went Coast.
9. The Film Branch has been closely observing recent films produced for the Department of the Army's
pxogran on Soviet espionage methods. We have recently accessioned a new release titled "The
Secret Underworld"* referring to Soviet techniques of industrial defense plant penetration.
'10. In response to a DDI requirements 86 photographs of the Soviet and Chinese Communist Party hierarchy
were furnished by the Photo Branch. OCT and OR cooperated on the project to produce two special
display boards for W. Cline.

11. DOD-JCS was given selected area orientation films on Indonesia, Malayasia, Iran, and Venezuela for
showing to the Joint War Games Agency under the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
12. At the request of the Office of Security Building Security Branch, GBt photographed all of the CIA
buildings in the metropolitan area. buildings were photographed and multiple copies of the
photography were furnished.
13. The "Brochure Project" for the Office of Personnel was completed by the Services Sections Photo
Branch. Approximately 20 shooting assignments were involved including helicopter flight in the
production of 166 color and black and white photos. Subjects covered by the GR photographers in-
cluded scenes of the Headquarters Building K=:Loys the gJA Seal, the library, inner court areas,
cafeteria, the computer in South Building, and the offices of the DCI. 25X1

1. The display of a new Soviet missile in the Hovenber 7th parade triggered an all out collection
effort to obtain complete photo coverage on a priority basis. Sources exploited included the
press services for initial coverage via trice photos, the television networks for videotape and
motion pictures, and the DIA for complete still coverage taken by the Service Attaches. A
total of 1,117 photographs on the parade welt. crash processed and disseminated to offices having
primary interest.

2. Two films dealing with espionage and tradecraft subjects, one a television show "Whistling
Shrimp" and the other a notion picture "Charade"s were obtained for special showings to
officials of the Office of the Directors DC?, and DDT.
3. First coverage in the form of two photos of the SA-3 missile in firing position, received
25X1 vta ' re processed under high priority and-30 copioa of each d1s-
seninaced to Agency and UZA offices.
4. A DU request for photos. of 15146 key foreign personalities was answered by furnishing 1,016
of those requested.
5. During this period 111m Branch completed 62 requests for DDP/SOD/J0IC including 47 films
screened and 31 films loaned.
6. In answer to a request from the O.S. Staff College, 56 photographs
covering terrain, tactical targets, and were forwarded for use in a
lecture series.

8. File Beaaah ed continuous screenings on 8 and 13 November of the motion picture coverage
of the November Seventh Moscow Parade and the 1 November coup in South Viet Nam. More than
330 persona attended the screenings of the November Seventh Parade.

visit; Dignitaries attending President Kennedy's funeral; Bowl= personalities; President Pax'
visit; Visit of the Irish President.

exploitation. In response to numerous requirements on Latin America served by Graphics
Register, arranged for the Read of our HSAM Desk to visit and
screen 5,200 color slides and 40,000 feet of motion picture film at the Alcoa Corporation.
Our PR/P Desk Head, at DD/P's requests visited to 7-44" a
aaapling of sow 6,000 slides on the Sino-Sov Bloc, owned by a West German national. The Gt

1. On March 11-14, of the Analysis Section,
Photo Branch, traveled to ore ew color slides taken by

was able to screen over 5,000 excellent slides taken
during a recent trip through East Africa, Southeast Asia, and the

3. Personality photographs were supplied for Biographic Handbooks on the Republic of South
Africa, China, Czechoslovakia, Peru, Repels Republic of the Congo, Japan, and Rwandi Burundi.
Photography was also supplied for three White House briefing books on Great Britain, Mexico,
and Jordan and a special briefing book for the Secretary of Defense on his February trip to
South Vietnam.
4. A print of the NBC White Paper "Cuba: Bay of Pigs" was acquired and a series of screenings
arranged including one for the WB Divisions DDP.
5. The conversion of the Master Photo File was completed from a country-province breakdown to
a country-VAC coordinate base on Cuba, North Vietnam, Mongolia, Laos, Ceylon, Burma, Cambodia
and Nepal.
6. A videotape of the "Unde " program "The Hidden Art of Intelligence" was ac-
25X1 quired at the request o# Mr. Allen W. Dulles participated in the program
as a member of the panel. The program was telecast on 29 March and shown to the Agency re-
questers on 30 March.
7. In response to a priority request from 081 on a special study of Soviet space science and
associated personnel, GR analysts screened pertinent motion picture film and tabbed 177 per-
sonality photos.

3. At the request of the Director's Offices the Film Branch has accessioned a portion of a
CBS Dews Report covering a visit of U.S. officials to South Vietnam. The film sequence
includes scenes of W. M cone, Secretary Damara, Ambassador Lodge, General Taylors and
Premier Nguyen Hhanh.
4. Graphics Register continues to emphasize coverage of Cuba. In June, three hours of unedited
motion picture film taken by a correspondent in 1963 was shown to SAS and DIA personnel.
Most of the footage was concerned with working conditions and family life.
5. Activity on the Personality Desk included photographs supplied for Briefing Books on General
Taylor's assigasertt to Saigon, General Le May's trip to Europe, Chancellor Erhard's visit to
the U. S., Japanese participants of the U.S. Japanese Committee on Scientific Cooperation,
and BR Handbooks on Indonesia and Israel.
6. the Personality Desk received requests for 3,624 personality photographs and of this number,
through file search and use of our unique collection facilities, C.8 was able to furnish
3,222 photographs.
7. May Day Parade Coverage: Initial activity centered on the immediate reproduction and dis-
semination of nave wire photos of the military hardware in the Moscow Parade and obtaining
a videotape of the complete Havana Parade. On 4 May we received selected copies of the

Attache photography of which 15 sets were reproduced for CIA customers on the s Y. On
8 May GR obtained one complete set of 3,000 photographs of the Attache report DIA
and produced additional copies of selected prints for OSl and CU. All of the expedite CIA
photo reproduction work was done in the CR crash lab.
