Specifications - 1
A. The following outline specification describes the general con-
struction of in Building, Auditorium, Cafeteria, Power House, two
entrance Gate Houses and Nitrate Film Storage House.
2. CODE REQUIREMENTS:
A. The National Building Code (3955) of the National Board of Fire
Underwriters, shall govern the work.
3. ENGINEERS OFFICE:
A. Construct Type "D" Engineer's office as shown on Public Build-
ing Service standard detail drawing y~-6-2-,33-A.
4+. DEMOLITION:
A. Demolish present two (2) story frame house existing on Southwest
corner of property. Fill in area as necessary to meet new grades and
provide top soil and seeding to match adjoining areas.
5. SITE WORK BY OTHERS
A. NOTE; The main building site has been leveled by others to
elevation 215'-O" and the Power House and Sub-Station site will be
leveled to elevations as shown on Site Plan.
B. Grading of entire property outside the pay lines around new
structures as indicated, foundation base course for all roads, walks
and parking areas and the drainage of all the above areas will be done
by others.
.. EXCAVATION:
A. Include all excavation of earth, rock, boulders and obstructions
necessary for the installation of all foundation walls, sub-drainage sys-
tem, floor construction on earth, pits and trenches and conveyor and duct
tunnels, for exterior steps and terraces where adjacent to or integral
with structures and for installatinn of utility lines underground frog.
Power House to the various buildings, and for boiler fuel storage tanks
located underground. Stack all topsoil.

B.. Include all backfilling around walls and grading immediately around
structures to pitch water away from same..
C. Include all excavation required for the installation of mechanical
trades within the areas covered by the structures.
D. Include all bracing and sheet piling of barb and all pumping re-
quired to keep excavations free of water until foundations are installed.
7. FOUNDATIONS:
A. All foundations for all structures shall be constructed of re-
inforced concrete, spread footing for walls and columns on soil of suit-
able bearing quality.
B. Include footing drain of 6" dia. agricultural clay tile and porous
fill at bottom of footing around all.perimeter walls and court walls and
under floor slabs and disposal of same in a suitable manner.
C. Provide porous fill of gravel not less than 6" under all concrete
slab construction on ground.
D. Exterior of foundation walls and footings of structure below grade
shall be dampprpofod with (3) plies of rag felt and four (4) moppings of
hot pitch. On last mopping apply a 1" inch, thick layer of asphalt impreg-
nated celotex protection.
STRUCTURAL FRAME
A. Structural frame of main structure including interior and exterior
columns and drop heads, two way rib system of floor and roof construct''
projecting canopies, etc.. shall. be constructed of reinforced concrete.
B. Auditorium shall be of thin wall reinforced controlled concrete.
C. Cafeteria shall be constructed of structural steel arches and in-
termediate framing with /-l8 gauge cellular metal roof dec{ . Provide
positive vapor seal by caulking interlocking lips of deck and caulking
countersunk end lap joints.
D.. Power House shall be constructed of structural steel with rein-
forced concrete roof and.flpor slabs.

E. Entrance Gate Houses and Nitrate Film Storage House shall be con-
structed of reinforced concrete floor and roof slab.
F. All forms for walls where exposed, exposed surfaces of spandrel
beams, canopies and other exposed concrete surfaces shall be of plywood
and surfaces after stripping left with s, smooth even finish.
G. Floor construction on earth of Basement shall be constructed of
6" inch thick concrete slab with integral cement finish included, rein-,
forced and laid over a porous fill covered with a layer of metal rein-
forced waterproof paper. Porous fill shall be drained.
H. Floor construction on earth of first floor Cafeteria, Auditorium
and Passages, over unexcavated areas shall be of reinforced concrete laid
over porous fill. Fill,thall be covered with a layer of metal, reinforced
waterproof paper.
I. Floor construction on earth of Ground Floor over unexcavated areas
shall be constructed of reinforced concrete slab laid over porous fill.
Top of this slab shall be waterproofed with 3 ply felt and pitch memba:une
waterproofing covered by a cement protection coat 1" inch thick; over pro-
tection coat install fill and finish as hereinafter specified.
J. Al]. pits and trenches below Basement floor level shall be water-
proofed with metali,c cement waterproofing..
N. Unless otherwise indicated, roof slabs will receive no fill and
top surface shall be finished smooth to receive waterproofing.
L. Cast in concrete structure all flashing reglets and inserts of
proper type for the securement of the work of other trades.
9. CONCRETE FILL AND CEMENT FINISH:
A. Install expanded shale concrete fill or other lightweight aggregate
concrete of thickness indicated with 1" cement finish over all floor con-
struction, except Basement floor and Penthouse floor. Such lightweight ag-
gregate concrete shall be non-corrosive type and shall weigh not more than
80 lbs, per cubic foot and develop a minimum crushing strength of not less
than 500 ibs, at the end of 23 days. Under floor duct system will be in-
stalled in this fill.
B. Install cement base where called for on finish schedule.

C. Provide 6 X 6 10/10 welded reinforcing mesh galvanized over all
underfloor ducts, also over all conduits and pipes within 1-3/4" of fin-
ished floor,
10, EXTEIIOR WALLS.
A. Enclosure walls and court walls of Main Building to extent as
indicated, shall be constructed of architectural precast stone panels
formed in story height units with openings provided for metal sash.
Each panel shall be anchored to spandrel beams, top and bottom, by means
of angles bolted through slab and to columns by straps to inserts all, as
indicated. All inserts in units and structures and all, angles, bolts,
straps for securement, shall be hot-dip galvanized.
B. Inserts shall be provided in panel for anchorage of metal sash
and spaced 2'y0" on centers.
C. All precast stone shall have a facing portion composed of pro-
perly crushed and graded opaque and translucent quartz combined with
white and/or gray cement as per approved sample.
D. All precast panels shall be reinforced with built-up galvanized
welded steel reinforcement, all carefully engineered for all structu:...;.1
stresses and temperature changes.
E. All precast stone shall have a minimum compressive strength of
7500 lbs. psi and a maximum absorption of 5 percent both at 26 days of
age, when tested by a recognized testing laboratory.
F. All facing panels shall be set in non-staining waterproof cement
mortar, filling full all. joints. Joints that are not accessible shall be
filled with same mortar but application shall be made by using a grout
pump of approved type. Face joints shall be raked out to a depth of 3/4"
and then caulked with "Thiokol" caulking, compound to the full depth and
tooled.
G. Three exterior walls of Power House shall be constructed of rein-
forced concrete scored as shown on drawings. The south wall shall, be con-
structed of concrete blocks stuccoed and scored as shown on drawings.
The .?%terior walls of Cores A, B, C, and D and the exterior walls
of the Pent Houses shall be constructed of reinforced concrete and scored
as shown on the elevations.

EXTERIOR WALLS (Cont'd)
H. Nitrate Film Storage Building walls shall be constructed of
thick masonry block with exterior' surfaces treated with Acrylic Resin
as specified for Main Building. Foundations and roof slab reinforced
concrete.
1. Gate Houses shall be constructed of reinforced concrete founda-
tions, bulkheads, floor and roof.
J. After all panels have been set in place and joints caulked and
surfaces cleaned dow-m, all exposed surfaces of facing panels and all
other exposed concrete surfaces of all buildings shall be given two (2)
coats of colorless Acrylic Resin applied in accordance with manufacturer's
specifications.
11. EXTERIOR WALL INSULATION ETC.:
A. All exterior walls, both case in place concrete and precast fac-
ing panels, shall be given a 1/8" thick asphaltic dampproofing into which
a 1" thickness of "Fiberglas" or approved equal riuid insulation with
positive vaporseal, ahall be applied.
B. Coiling of Nitrate film Storage Building shall be insulated with
1-1/2" thickness of non-flammable mineral sprayed-on insulation.
C. Soffit over Second Floor exterior shall be insulated with 2"
thick insulation with vaporseal.
12. ROOFING, WATERPROOFING AND SHEET METAL:
M. 7 T`
A. All roof surfaces of flat roofs and curved roof of Cafeteria
shall be covered with a 4 ply 20 year Bonded built-up roofing with slag
finish, laid over a two (2") inch thickness of rigid insulation over a
two-ply felt and pitch vapor barrier.
B. On metal decking over Cafeteria same insulation shall be installed
but insulation shall be secured to deck by means of metal clips wedged into
channels of decking and supplied by deck manufacturer. Provide one (1)
clip for every two (2) square feet of insulation.
C. Alternate: State difference in cost if all roof surfaces are
finished with white marble chips in place of slag, except Pent House
roofs and dome of Auditorium.

D. Install four (4) ply felt and pitch waterproofing in Pent House
fan rooms, Ground Floor fan rooms, Kitchen and Pantry s,r?eas where they
occur over excavated areas below, on second slab under Ground Floor slab
in toilets and slop sink closets over switchboard rooms in Basement. Water-
proofing shall be carried up on walls it back of finish at least six (6")
inches.
E. Over slab of Auditorium dome, install a two (2) ply felt and asphalt
vapor barrier over which install a 2" thickness of rot>proof rigid insulation
stud nailed to concrete, over which install a four (i+) ply felt and pitch
(special consistency) membrane waterproofing.
F. All flashings, except where indicated as stainless steel, 26 gauge,
shall be 16 ounce lead coated copper for cap flashings, 20 ounce copper for
base flashings and for covering of concrete copings. Flash Around pipe
standards of railings, flash at intersection of all roofs with vertical walls
and parapets. Lead-coated copper covering of all projective canopies.
G. All flashings in contact with aluminum shall be ;1,426 gauge stainless
steel.
H. Provide counter 'lashings at top of foundation wall dampproofing.
Flashing shall be set in flashing reglets of same material as flashing.
13. AUDITORIUM DOME COVERING:
A. Over the membrane waterproofing heretofore specified, a one (1)
inch thick cement protection coat shall be installed, reinforced with
welded galvanized mesh installed continuously over the dome and ending at
the foundation walls and welded at, intervals to stainless steel plates
bolted to the foundation walls. This protection coat shall be applied by
Gunite or other approved method. Wired laps in the mesh shall be such as
to develop the full strength of its members and mesh shall be blocked up
with cement pads 1/2" above membrane before cement mixture is applied. Ex-
pansion joints shall be provided every 141-0" each direction,
B. Stainless steel flashing at foundation and plastic tube weeps in-
stalled as indicated.
C. The finish surface of dome shall be 3/Z" X 3/4" Italian vitreous
mosaic tile of approved type and color, set on a cement and lime leveling
and scratch coat over the protection coat previously specified.

D. Expansion joints extending through the thickness of tile and setting
bed for same shall be provided directly over the scored joints in the protec-
tion coat, 14'-0" X 1l'-0" o.c., approximately, and fill with "Thiokol" caulk-
ing compound under gun pressure and strike same as directed. All surfaces
shall be clean at completion.
l4. INTERIOR STAIRS:
'A. Enclosed stairs shall be constructed of steel channel strings, steel
risers with integral tread nosing of non-slip abrasive, steel an treads and
platforms, cement filled. Railings of horizontal steel pipe and newels..
B. Ornamental stairs shall have steel stringers, concealed steel treads
and risers finished with terrazzo treads and risers, tubular aluminum railings
with tubular standards and flush fittings.
C. All surfaces of stairs shall be given a shop coat of iron oxide
zinc chromate paint.
15, WINDOWS:
A. All sash shall be Heavy Intermediate Type Steel of dimensions shown
on Drawings with removable glazing beads, out projecting type for cleaning
and fixed type as shown on drawings. All members shall be of proper strength
to meed Code Requirements. Hardware for operating sash shall be of manufac-
turer's standard,of highest quality,, provide bronze cam with key latch and re-
movable handle on all operating vents. Provide one handle for every 100 win-
dows,,
B. Access to decks shall be by means of tubular steel doors set in frames
of assembly.
C. Fixed glass panels of Second and Seventh Floors, Cafeteria, and en-
closure corridors to Auditorium and Cafeteria shall be constructed of steel
rolled sections for frames and mullions provided with removable glazing beads.
D. All surfaces of all steel members shall be hot-dip galvanized and
bonderized and shop painted. Glazing beads secured by means of stainless steel
tap screws,.
E. All window glass shall be 3/16" 'A' Quality and double strength flat
drawn sheet glass as shown on drawings. All other sash and doors shall be
glazed with l/4" thick polished plate glass; 1/4" and 3/8" plate glass for
Cafeteria, and Corridors to Cafeteria and Auditorium. See drawings for all
glass thicknesses.

semblies, a continuous metal closure shall be provided. the full height.

16.. LATHING AND PLASTERING:

wall construction of 1" channels 12" on centers with runner at floor and
ceiling. Lath shall be 3.4 pound e,gaanded metal lath. All surfaces shall
receive scratch and brown gypsum plaster with hard. white finish.
B. Furring and plaster will stop one (1") inch above suspended cell
$ngs where they occur except in Security Rooms where masonry partitions
extend to structural slab, then furring and plaster will extend to slab.
C. Install wire lath and s ratah and brown gypsum plaster to close
in space around air conditioning pipes running through exterior wall
furred piers. This closure shall be provided on one side of pier only
and in Secured Rooms where masonry partitions occur.
D. Provide metal furred and lathed suspended ceilings where indicated,
Plastered the same as walls. Purlins shall be 1-1/2" angles or channels
suspended 4t-O" X 4'-0" on centers from structural slab. Cross Purr with
1" channels and lath as specified for metal wall facing. Plaster with
scratch and brown gypsum and hard white finish except where acoustical the
is called for, the white finish is omitted.
E. All masonry block. partitions shall be plastered in gypsum with
hard wihte finish. Omit plaster on inside of shafts, stairs, mechanical
rooms, building maintenance shops, garage and incinerator rooms see In-
terior Finish F-12.
F. Install metal lath strip over joints between masonry block 'par-
titions and columns.

LATIIING AND PLASTERING:
G. Special metal furred and plastered constructed wall panels shall
be provided in Auditorium to obtain acoustical effect. These surfaces
shall be lathed and plastered with scratch end brown c-yp_,um plaster with
hard white finish. All metal constructed catwalks shall, be provided as in?-
dicated. All furred construction shall be kept free from edge contacts
with concrete shell as detailed. ,Sprayed.-on asbestos sound deadening shall
be applied to interior surfaces of shell where called for.
17- INTERIOR PARTITIONS :
A. The Drawings indicate the extent of masonry partitions and all such
partitions shall be carried alp to structural slab above,
B. Provide fire rated masonry block partitions enclosing elevator,
dumbwaiter and conveyor shafts; duct and pipe shafts; stair and toilet
enclosure walls; corridors in Basement, Ground and First Floors; electric
and telephone closets; mechanical rooms, storage rooms,, shops, garage,
kitchen, laboratories and incinerators.
C. Masonry block shall be steam cured cinder block or hollow struc-
tural clay tile.
NOTE: Rooms enclosed by 8" of masonry shall have the cores of
the blocks filled with mortar. Not 8" walls in Basement.
D. Sub-dividing office partitions of masonry block where called for
on Drawings.
E. Structural facing tile where called for in Interior Finish.
F. Except where masonry partitions are called for, all other sub-divid-
ing interior partitions shall be plaster board with joints taped, secured to
metal studs. Partition shall stop at underside of acoustical ceilings. Pro-
vide the following:

(3) Anchor studs to furring of hung ceiling and add
ceiling channels where necessary to pick up par-
titions. Provide wood blocking as required be-
tween top of acoustical ceilings and bottom of
ceiling channels. As noted on drawings.
G.Low sub-dividing partitions 5'-8" high with tops 28" of glass
and 51-81' high wood doors. These partitions are also plaster board con-
struction with steel studs as shown on drawings.
H. Alternate Price: Submit alternate price substituting metal par-
titions in place of partitions noted in F and 0 above.
18. TOILET COMPARTMENTS :
A. All toilet compartments and doors to same shall be constructed of
hollow metal furniture steel with insulated core. All shall have baked
enamel finish and shall be floor mounted and have chrome plated brass hard-
ware.

F-i Office Spaces: Suspended, ceiling acoustical tile, Floor 1/8" thick
asphalt tile Class "C" patterns. Top set asphalt tile base 4" high. Walls
painted.

Structural facing tile to ceiling. Suspended plastered ceiling, painted.

22. WALK-IN REFRIGERATORS:
A. Masonry walls, ceilings and floors of all walk-in refrigerators
shall be insulated with two (2) layers of two (2") inch thick cork insula-
tion and surfaces lathed and plastered with cer,nt plaster.
B. Ceilings shall be finished with smooth trowelled cement plaster.
Floors finished with quarry tile laid in cement mortar. Walls shall be
finished with ceramic glazed facing tile.
C. Doors to these spaces shall be wood faced both sides, covered with
stainless steel. Rebated wood frames covered with stainless steel. Doors
shall be insulated with cork core. All hardware brass chrome plated.
Neoprene gaskets the perimeter of doors.

23. VENETIAN BLINDS:
A. Generally, venetian blinds provided throughout, surface mounted
type, aluminum slats, plastic tape, steel head. Special blinds in Cafeter.'.a.
24. EXTERIOR RAILINGS:
A. All exterior steps shall be provided with railings constructed
of aluminum (alumil.ited), round tubular sections for both horizontal and
vertical members with flush fittings set in inserts in masonry and pro-
perly flashed with stainless steel.
B. Provide alumilited aluminum railings of'rectangul.ar tubular sec-
tions for both horizontal and vertical members with flush fittings for
areaways and 7th floor roof terraces flashed with stainless steel.
25. GRANITE STEPS AND PAVING (MAIN ENTRANCE):
A. Where indicated on Drawings, install granite steps and platform
paving. Steps shall be cut from the solid granite and provided with wash
and seats. Finish of steps 6 cut, set on concrete foundation.
B. Paving shall be in patterfl as shown, 2 to 3 inches thick, set in
cement mortar on a concrete slab. Finish shall be rough sawn.
C. Granite shall be "Cold Spring Red", by Cold Spring Granite Co.,
"Royal Red" by Royal Granite Co., St. Cloud, Minn., or "Cherokee" by
Georgia Marble Co., Atlanta, Georgia. Granite for cornerstone shall be
a light grey, to be selected:
26. RADIATOR AND AIR CONDITIONING ENCLOSURES:
A. Provide and install over exterior wall air conditioning units.
They shall be provided under each window between piers whether A. C. unit
exists in opening or not.
B. Provide continuous enclosures in 2nd and 7th floors,, enclosed
corridors to Auditorium and Cafeteria and in Cafeteria as shown in draw-
ings.
C. Enclosures shall be formed of No. 12 and 16 gauge f irniture steel
shop painted. Provide streamline grille in front and adjustable Grilles on
top. Front shall be made removable.
