Enclosed are two copies of Progress Report No. 2 which summar-
izes the action taken on the subject task order during the period ending
20 November 1958. Also enclosed is a copy of the Project Fiscal Report as
of 30 November 1958, and a copy of the current Project Schedule.
During the first two weeks of December, this contractor's
activity on the program was substantially increased in order to meet the
requested advanced completion date of 18 December 1958. This high level of
activity resulted in a rapid increase in the rate of expenditure of contract
funds, especially during the week prior to the completion date. A chart
showing the daily man hour expenditure during that period is enclosed. A
preliminary review of costs expended has revealed that the estimated cost
of this task has been exceeded by approximately $1,700.00.
As a result of the tests accomplished on 18 December and
revisions in the design requirements, we have been advised by the Project
Engineer that a major change in the contract scope is anticipated. Work
on this program has therefore been suspended pending determination of new
design criteria for the equipment, and the authorization of additional funds
to cover the overexpenditure.

On 21 November the Government Project Engineer requested by
telephone that the date for testing the conveyor system be changed from
12 December 1958 to 18 December 1958.
Project Progress:
During the reporting period, the following work on Task No. 2
was accomplished.
1. Drawings of brake castings and details were completed and
released to the shop on 10 November.
2. Drawings of parts requiring heat treatment were completed
and released to the shop on 17 November.
3. Drawings of the major assemblies composing the outer rail,
inner rail, and gate were completed and released to the shop on 21 November.
4. Drawings of miscellaneous detail components of the system
were'completed and released through 16 December.
5. A preliminary demonstration of the operation of the conveyor
system was conducted on 17 December 1958 by Government personnel. During
operation of the system, the following operating difficulties were encountered:
a. The boxes used during operation were 17" wide, 35" high,
and 58" long, inside dimensions. Outside dimensions exceeded inside dimensions
by several inches. Since this contractor had been informed that the given
dimensions were outside dimensions and the system was designed to accommodate
boxes of the given size, the boxes used during the demonstration became jammed
between the gate and rail.
b. This contractor was informed that the pallet size to be
used was 44" x 17". Accordingly, roller and caster spacing was designed to
accommodate loads imposed by a pallet of that size. Pallet size used during
the demonstration was approximately 17" x 17", giving rise to excessive roller
loads causing pallet deflection, and consequent "porpoising" of the carton
while passing along the conveyor. In the caster area, deflection of the pallet.
caused interference between the pallet and the structure of the transition
crea, and slight interference between the pallet, and the retracted brakes.
6. A limited demonstration was held on 18 December 1958.
During this demonstration a special pallet measuring 35" long by 17" wide
was made and appeared to work satisfactorily.
7. On 19 December 1958 the Government Project Engineer informed
the General Manager by telephone that a meetin to discuss the future course
of the program would be held at on 29 December 1958.
