The requirement exists for an automatic communication system which will accept, analyze, and store a particular form of datsJ At the present time, no method of data analysis is known which will yield the desired results in an equipment of the size and weight specified.' In recognition of this situation, the proposed study is separated into two parts. Phase I will cover familiarization with the data analysis problem, with the intent that the feasibility of meeting requirements may be established. In other words, Phase I should determine whether a solution is likely to be derived through more intensive effort. If so, this detailed study will be conducted under Phase II. This approach insures minimum expenditure of funds and effort until it is clear that they may be profitably applied. Phase I. Familiarization Study To initiate this study, Contractor proposes to devote approximately two months to the indoctrination and familiarization of project personnel with the CS-15 data handling requirements. During this period, specialists in the fields of data analysis and in the sources of these data will be consulted to acquire a more complete knowledge of present work in these fields. The communication aspect of the CS-15 system will not be considered in this phase of the program. At the conclusion of Phase I, a conference of Government engi- neers and Contractor's personnel will be held to consider the results of the study to that time. Phase II will be initiated only if it is mutually agreed that a sound approach to the data analysis problem has been determined. A complete system will not be built, actual construction being limited to breadboards required to demonstrate the feasibility and soundness of the approach, or for unconventional circuits. It is anticipated that the to result in a system design for the CS-15. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of the data assimilation, reduction and storage Phase II. Detailed Study A detailed study of the CS-15 requirements will then be conducted, for the AS-b under Task Order d. A study of the circuits necessary for adapt- ing portions of the AS-6 system to the CS-15 application will be included. No design or construction will be performed on such circuits under the study. It is anticipated that the study herein proposed will constitute a separate Task Order under Contract RD-103. This effort will be described in informal monthly letter progress reports presently being submitted. No other reports will be issued during Phase I of this program. One Quarterly Report will be issued during Phase II, and a comprehensive Final Report will also be submitted. Engineering drawings or sketches are not required. ?
