Approved For Release 1999/08/25 : CIA-RDP78-03109A000200010006 OP-32 F-5 WASHINGTON DOCUMENT CENTER TRANSLATION Number 30 . 3 Sep 19+6 ISSUED UNDER THE JOINT AUSPICES OF THE INTELLIGENCE DIVISION, W D G S AND OFFICE OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE, U.S. NAVY DEPARTMENT Approved For Release 1999/08/25: CIA-RDP78-03109A000200010006-1 INTRODUCTION This publication consists of a detailed breakdown of. the decimal classification sys- tem used by Washington Document Center for the purpose of organizing documents, mainly in Japanese but also in other languages, into readily accessible subject categories. It is based on the 1942 edition of the Jap- anese MORI-Kiyoshi Decimal Classification System (NIPPON JUSHIN BUNRUI HO) - chosen because of its design for application to Japanese material - modified to suit the needs of a mainly military and naval library. The chief modification was made in the Military, Naval, Air and Civil Defense blocks (i.e., 3969 397, 395 & 399), where the final digit chanced to correspond with the initial digit of the appropriate blocks of the IG System. Thus a more detailed subdivision was simply and practically attained by the combining of the MORI- Kiyoshi and IG Systems in these blocks. Further additions were made where the sys- tem proved to be insufficiently detailed or out of date - as, for example, on the subject of nuclear physics. It is believed that-the system as it stands in the following publication is adequate for the classification of materi- al on any subject at the present time.
