I also provided her a short background on this subject covered in the Beecher article in the Boston Globe. 10? LIAISON William Allen, in the office of Representative on n 17. Murtha (D. , Pa. ), called to say that he was, preparing a weekly column for Mr. Murtha on certain things to try to counter some of the negative. reports that have appeared in the press. He said he was trying to come up with good things that the Agency had. done which could be talked about. I told him there wasn't much that could be said that was unclassified but I pointed out the Director's reference in his television appearance on Sunday to the work which the Intelligence Community had performed in alerting our policymakers to the threat of offensive missiles in Cuba. at the time of the "Cuban Missile Crisis." I told Allen I would check for other instances and let him know if. I came up with anything. 11. I I LIAISON Charles Snodgrass, on the staff of House Appropriations 5uOcommittee on Defense, called to relay a message from Ralph Preston, also. of that Subcommittee, that the Subcommittee wishes to keep in its files, at least for the time being, the letter the Director sent to Chairman George Mahon (D., Texas) yesterday and the enclosed memorandum. I told Sn.odgrass that I would talk to the Director about this and if he has any objections, I would be back in touch with him. I 12.
